Give it a try

Hi wingers,
Reading about Garmin maps issues and update prices in this forum, let me show you this page
http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl
This maps are free and legal. There you can build and customize your maps and have no POI search issues. They work very well in Europe (don't know how they do in USA or Canada) and are updated much more frequently than Garmin maps are.
I think it worth a try.

I have been using them for a year or so now, and wrote a How To for this site on loading them.

I think they are very good.

They do not seem to be able to make a full North America map, or even a limited one. Told me too many files were selected, so the map would not be made. Also, it appears as if a full North America map would run in the area of 3.3 GBs, so would not fit on the card for the GL1800 OEM Navi. I shall have to continue making my update maps myself in my computer so I can keep them under 2 GBs. For European mapping, tho, this seems like an excellent source.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey
