Hunting stationary Idle on GL1800 "06" modelyear

Postby wing67 » Sat Jun 12, 2010 3:46 pm

Hi Guy"s,
I have a serius problem, and hope sombody can give me any answer, to try to fix it.......

The stationary idle on my 2006 GL1800, whit only 10.000Miles, is serieus hunting for a correct idle, when i stop at a light and pull the clutch the rpm is falling down to 300 rpm and it happens several times the engine drops dead.
My first thougt was, battery, changed the battery but it is still the same....check the dynamo, it's ok, change the air filter, i did and nothing happend in a good way, than the dealer say i will sell you a liquid product to put in to the gas to clean the inside off the engine and injectors, i used this for 3 mounts, nothing better...
Went several time"s back to the dealer to check,... and read out the computer, but everything is in range, he also resetted more then once the ECM, to learn again the program on idle, but nothing changed.... :!:

two days ago, i could lay my hands on some nice parts from the same bike, GL1800, same modelyear, 2006, also a US model, whit no problems of course whit the idle....
We have changed first off all the compleet trothle body, with all the sensors, tp sensor, baro sensor, air sensor, so compleetly every sensor in and around the trothle body and near the air house, and whe changed the vacuum lines or pipes, those are only two short ones by the model 1800 form jear 2006,...we started the bike and...........still the same problem.

Than we have changed the ECM, we notised than that the idle was correct, and not hunting anymore, when we gas up to 4-5000rpm, and let go the gas, it did not fall down anymore but stil stays at a 750 / 800 rpm, so thats nice...., But :!: we notised when we changed the ECM, that the FI light goes on, already before starting the bike, and gives us the code 24, this is the code from the left O2 sensor or the FA sensor, the lamda sensor in the exhoust pipe.....
The funny part is whit my own ECM he does not give any FI code, only when whe pull the plugg from the left or right sensor, than he gives us a FI code 24, and whit the new ECM he gives a FI code from the moment i turn the key on contact to start the bike......
We did take a look in the manual, and see that the resistance off the O2 sensor must be between 0.86 Ohm and 1.1 Ohm, whe checked the resistance from the left sensor, and this resistance is 1.3 Ohm, and from the right O2 sensor it is 1.4 Ohm...
Should it be possible that these are broken, or.... :?:
Should it be, or is it possible that a bad O2 sensor or sensors give you a bad and hunting idle....... :?:
Why is my ECM giving no code, and does bad idle stationary, and the new one, give's a correct idle stationary but a FI code...... :?:
How is it possible, that i read about this problem on several postings on outher forums, because i am not the onlyone whit this problem, and nowbody can, or even have solved the problem..... :?: :?:

Please will sombody help me because i am at the end of the line and dont now what to do now......
Can please somebody help :?:
Thanks
Stefan Wing67

I would first check your O2 sensor to see if it is the cause of all of your troubles. If it's bad, change it, then try with your ECM. If you still have the idle problems, check and see if the other ECM still shows the bad O2 code. It's where I would start, anyway.

hi wingadmin, thx for the reply,
I have checked the resistance of both O2 sensors, they give me 1.3 and 1.4 Ohm, following the manual the must be in range from 0.86 and 1.1, so this is normaly bad.... :!:

But my question is, is it at all possible that the "bad" O2 sensors, giving a hunting or fluctating idle, or do they nothing have to do with it :?: :?:

The ECU could be reading the incorrect O2 level from a faulty O2 sensor and attempt to adjust the mixture to compensate, so yes, that could certainly hurt your idle...AND your mileage!

You haven't kept us updated on any progress.......
IHave you tried doing an ECM reset? That would be the first thing that I would try.

iff i get 10 dollar for each time the dealer resetted the ECM, i was a verry happy person......
i ordered a new ECM, and the problem is gone, no hunting, no ideling up and down, so, it cost me a lot of money, but it is fixed :D :D :D

That is good news!
Best to start with the easy/low cost possibilities. Sometimes only the costly repair will fix the problem.
Interesting to know that is what it took to repair.
