I don't know that there are a lot of shortcuts to oil changes - I like to ride the bike to normal operating temperature, then let it sit for about 30 minutes or so to let the oil cool and drain to the sump - but not so cool that it thickens up. The warmer the oil, the thinner, so you get more of the old, dirty oil out faster. Let it drain until it is an occasional drip, replace the filter (make sure to lubricate the oil seal on the new filter with fresh oil before installing), fill with fresh oil, check the level, then start it up to check for leaks. That's about it!

I wrote this article up on how to change your oil in a GL1100, but most of it is applicable to other bikes as well.

If I recall, the book says to remove the front cowling....this is totally not necessary, and all can be done with it on the kickstand or centerstand (pref centerstand), just like a car.
