CB/Intercom Question

Postby baumedagn » Tue Apr 07, 2015 1:03 pm

I ride with a friend that has a 2011 Yamaha Royal Star Venture, I can hardly hear him when talking on the cb if my intercom is on. With the intercom off, it's like we're sitting right next to each other. When I ride with other Goldwingers, it doesn't matter if the intercom is on or off, it's always loud and clear. And they have the same issue hearing him. Now, I know what you're thinking, I've already tried to get him off of that Yamaha  But he loves it and to each his own. I'm just trying to understand why this is happening. Thanks

I used to work in 2 way radio repair, what you are describing sounds to me like the Yamaha has a modulation issue with his unit. This is the separate item from power output. Poor voice modulation causes, amongst other things, garbled voice or muffled voice. I am sure why it works better with your intercom off, unless the ambient noise is depressing your intercom slightly. I feel tho, that the Wings are not the issue. He may only need a new mic, but at least a power and modulation check by a radio tech.

Doesn't sound like the issue is with HIS radio, but something going on in YOUR audio unit since you said that when your intercom is on the problem exists. That would rule out his radio as the problem.
Beyond that, I have nothing.

Steve keep in mind he said the other Wings with him have the same problem with the Yamaha. That's why I went the way I did. But, you may be right too. Hard to diagnose via emails. Ride safe all!

It might be a simple matter of all the Wings adjusting the mute point for the CB so it "quiets" the other audio systems and recieves a CB signal quicker.

Or it could be that the Yammy needs to have his antenna's SWR (standing wave ratio) checked, as it seems everyone is having trouble hearing him.

A modulation or SWR issue wouldn't explain why it works perfectly when his intercom is turned off.

I wonder if the intercom is picking up RF from his CB? If you send him 1/4 or 1/2 mile down the road and then transmit back to you, does the problem still occur?

Yes, it doesn't matter if he's right next to me or half a mile away. We had the same issue when I had my GL1500. But I thought it may have been my radio since the bike was a 1990.
