Clutch went out on F6B

Postby CMReynolds1 » Sun Apr 19, 2015 9:01 am

I just had my bike towed to the dealer for warranty repair. I got on it to ride, made it about a block and it acted like the brakes were locked up. Tried, what I thought would help, to free them. Rocking back/forth a few times.

However when they did free up, the clutch was slipping very badly. I could actually rev it up while in first, etc. So turned around and brought it home. It only has 7300 miles on it, as I just bought a few months ago and in the Pacific NW you don't get a lot of riding in the winter. It is under warranty so I will let Big Red fix it, but anyone got any ideas as to what you think may have happened?

Thanks for any input you can give me.

PS Of course it broke on the first day of 70 degree weather and the weather will continue for about 4 days. Should be about the time the bike comes home!

Best deal for you is if it was only low on fluid in reservoir. If bleeder was not closed off completely it could have slowly dripped fluid until there was not enough to engage clutch. If it was older I would think a drip at hand lever, just went through that myself.

She was good on level, first thing I checked and no leaks either. Appears to be a mechanical failure of some kind. I guess Tuesday Big Red will let me know.

Lets hope they don't have to remove the engine for repairs or I would be asking for a replacement bike.

Few years ago I bought a new Chrysler and at 6k the transmission went out. Overdrive had already been replaced at 2k so I cried Lemon. Dealer offered me $6k back and replaced transmission to satisfy us. Went for 288k before it was wrecked in snow last year.

Thanks Robb, great food for thought. I will update the post when Big Red lets me know.

Did you slip the clutch a lot (i.e. burn it out) when trying to get the bike to move when the brakes locked up on you?

Yes I knew it was wrong, but had to get out of road.

My suspicion then is that you quickly wore through the clutch plates in your clutch - i.e. you "burned out" the clutch. You'll need to have a new clutch installed.

Well it is the clutch, just like we all thought. They want me to pay for it. But there are several reasons we are discussing this. I bought the bike in late August 2014. It is a 2013 model and was the 8th one off the line in Japan. It had 6200 miles and I have put on only 1200 during the winter, so not a lot of riding since I bought it.

Now for its history. It was shipped to Cycle World and a couple of other bike mags and was used for testing for the articles in their stories about the F6B. There was also a black one tested (mine being red). I was told this when I bought it and kind of blew it off as salesman BS. But when I got home, in a saddlebag was Cycle World's Insurance Certificate! So the story was true. Upon further inspection the frame had serious scratches in it on both sides form cornering. I cleaned them up and repainted the lower frame. Then I noticed the bike had a Bridgestone on the front and Dunlop on the back. So another sign of something had happened.

This is why I am arguing with Big Red to pay up on the clutch repair. Wish me luck!

If that's the case, you can be pretty much guaranteed that the clutch was fairly worn from high RPM standing starts (0-60 tests) and whatever other foolishness the magazine people put it through.

GOOD NEWS!!! Big Red will replace the clutch & any other parts required for free! As WingAdmin mentioned they cycle mags surely tortured that clutch and I got what was left. I am happy, shows Big Red is pretty good outfit.
