GL 1800 valves

Postby John S » Wed Jun 24, 2015 11:56 am

Hello,
Can somebody tell me whether or not the valves on my 2007 GL 1800 need to be adjusted once in a while. My friend told me they were Self adjusting. Is that true?

If that's the case, what is involved in a tune up?

Thanks in advance,

John

They are not self adjusting. The GL1500 had hydraulic valve lifters, but for the GL1800 Honda went back to manually adjustable valves, of the shim-under-bucket type. Adjusting them is not as simple as turning the adjustment screw like on the four-cylinder Wings - you have to replace shims with shims of the correct width to adjust them. That said, the first valve check is not scheduled until 32,000 miles, and very few owners need them adjusted at that point. A large number of GL1800 owners find that their valves don't need adjustment until closer to 80,000 miles - and even then, only a tiny amount.
