Lowering GL1800

Postby tjohnson4au » Wed Jul 29, 2009 1:13 pm

I hope that this isn't to elementary for this site. I just bought a new 2008 GL1800. It has the ABS/Nav/Audio/Comfort package. What would be my options to lower the bike approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches? Seat? Shocks? Anything else?

I copied this from another forum and I hope it helps... 8-)

I received and installed the lowering bracket on my 2001 GL1800 today and did it ever make a difference. During the winter I installed the "HYPER-PRO" suspension springs into my front and rear suspension. As a result my bike road and handled nicer but it also raised the bike about 3/4 - 1" and I always felt like I was leaning forward. Installing the bracket brought my bike back down to slightly lower than stock. After a test ride I found that it handles a lot better lowered. There is no change in harshness and in fact I sense it may be even smoother. The only scraping I noticed was the after market plate attached to my side stand. I have Kuryakyn floorboards an I did not scrape them. The bike leans perfectly on the side stand without any adjustments. I have a ride off centre stand and currently I have to treat it as a normal centre stand until I can get a couple of plates welded on the bottom this winter. 1/4" should do it. I had no issues installing the bracket and it took less than 1 hour.

Appreciate the heads up. I don't mean to be naive, but is the lowering bracket part of the Hyper-Pro set up? If not, what is the make of the bracket, and where did you order it from? Thanks in advance.

I plan on putting one on my bike and then run 180/70 tires...which should bring me back to stock height

How hard is it to install the lowering kit? What all does it involve?

Not totally sure, but I suspect it may involve getting to the rear shock, which involves pulling the shelter and gas tank...it may be possible to get to this part of the bike without all that disassembly from the bottom, but I doubt it. If it were me, I'd start with modifying the seat; that way you can carve it for more comfort while you are lowering the height...I dunno about the guy that says he lowered it and didnt scrape anything but the kickstand plate, as I scrape my footpegs and belly pan on a daily basis, and my bike isn't lowered, and I'm not using floorboards. I'd hate to lose any more lean angle, which you undoubtedly would do if you lowered the suspension.
