WB Button on 12/08 GL1800

Postby saw » Wed Sep 02, 2015 9:42 pm

Hi from saw at country Queensland, Australia,
For a bit of fun ,I am looking into installing a manually operated reversing beeper.
For the manual switch to operate the reversing beeper, I am looking at the WB button on my series 1, GL1800, airbag model as Australia does not have this airwave service.
I have not opened up the LHS panel to see what is behind this useless WB button, so I am asking if anyone can advise me that if I disconnected this WB button would it have any effect on other functions ?
If the WB button is a problem, I might look at the empty CB control block on the LHS of the handlebars as Australia has again a different system to the USA and our airwaves are often full of a lot dribble talk.
Big Thanks from saw in the sunshine state of Australia.

I believe the WB button is part of the radio (?) You might want to look elsewhere, or install your own. Maybe look into the electrical schematic and see if you can't take advantage of a relay contact associated with the reversing switch.

Thanks Steve F,
That is a good point about interfering with the radio and my concern exactly before asking.
That is my don't know problem.
Thanks also for the schematics suggestion but looking at a schematic glazes my brain over, just does not compute.
Also it's hard to find good / experienced advice when you live out in the 'sticks' and the nearest GW dealer is nearly 3 hours away.
My preference is for a manually operated switch so that I can turn on my reverse beeper switch for a laugh and giggle when the occasion arises.
I have looked at cheap ebay aftermarket handlebar mounted switches but they seem to be designed for a round handlebar and look cheap.
I have also "internet" looked at the Show Chrome brand style accessory switch blocks that look ideal but with international freight, currency conversion and bank fees would set me back a days pay.
This idea may end up in the too hard basket.
Thanks again Steve F.

Steve, first welcome to the forum.
You're right, there isn't much on eBay in your area.

I don't know if the one that you are looking at is similar to this one, but Kuryakyn also makes one like this, so there are options.
You could also just get a single switch locally and hook it up, but that would require drilling a hole, which some prefer not to do.

Keep posting and let us know how it works out.

Well done NVSB4,
Yes the Show Chrome LED accessory switch block is what I like, but not the landed price over here.
The Kury seems to be a superior product as it appears to be a more complete package for the same money.
But it only comes in a chrome finish which I try to avoid in my dash area, due to sunshine reflections distracting me, while I do my tourist sight seeing thing while riding.
I love to look around at the country Queensland bush while riding but need one eye for the road and the other for the bush and the Kangaroos that insist on hopping across the road in front of me.
I might have to find the dollars to make this happen.
Big Thanks NVSB4

Show Chrome does have those in black matte, #52-705LMA (for left grip) and #52-705MA (for right grip).

Chromeworld Austrailia (in New South Wales) carries Show Chrome products, but you're right, they are expensive. They say they source and ship from US suppliers, so don't know if you would save anything through them. Both on their site show $153.95, but don't know if that's showing AUD or USD. If AUD, at current rate, that's $107.57 USD.
left grip & right grip

Cyclemax (US) has them here for $66 USD or 94.50 AUD.
Would shipping through Cyclemax be more than 60 AUD?
