As the title says, I'm curious as to what the little plate is for that is bolted to the swing arm near the joint with the bevel box/diff unit. It looks like a giant chain link plate and it's held on by 2 bolts and rubber washers. Is it some kind of dampener?

I too was wondering what that "thingy" was too. I finally found out when replacing the shaft seal on the rear wheel end of the shaft that it is indeed a vibration dampener. I was getting oil out thru it so I finally found out from my Honda dealers mechanic because I thought originally that my oil leak was from/caused by that part. Not sure how it works but it is supposed to help with shaft vibration. Hope that helps.
