Electrical Voodoo

Postby Cleetorn » Tue Mar 08, 2016 3:48 pm

I have no tail lights, dash lights or power to the gauges of my ’06 Wing. However, my brake lights and turn signals work just fine. I have checked/swapped my fuses and the relays under the seat. I have checked the connectors to the back of the instrument panel. There are no broken pins & the connections are tight. I disconnected/reconnected the harness blocks in the front to make sure they are solid.

This has happened once before in 2015 but the problem seemed to fix itself before I could trace it down. I was told that the gauges & the lights are separate issues but they both went out at the same time both last year and this. There must be some inter-relation but I can’t seem to find it from either direction.

Does anybody have any magic out there that can reverse the voodoo that is keeping me and my ride apart?

The gauges and the lights do run on separate circuits - the lights are on the ACC power bus, and the gauges are on the ignition bus. So they were right in that regard.

However...they all do share the same ground. Find the solid green wire on the back of the instrument panel connector, run a temporary wire from a known good ground (battery negative terminal is a good one) and connect it to that green wire. If you have a bad ground, there's a good chance that will bring it back to life - in which case you know what the problem is.
