1800, trunk latch mount cracked, need help

Postby wingnut19 » Tue Mar 29, 2016 12:02 pm

Trunk and right saddlebag latches quit working. Seems like they were catching on something up in the latch mechanism. As I started taking things apart, I noticed that the mount is cracked where the latch mechanism attaches. This appears to be the actual molded bottom of the trunk. As you pull the trunk lever, the whole mechanism slides towards the rear of the bike and then the levers "catch" where they go up to the latch mechanism and keep the levers from full travel letting the bags open. Is this actually part of the trunk bottom ? Is this repairable somehow ? Has anyone ever had this happen to them.

First, welcome to the forum.
I have a 1500 instead of an 1800, but hopefully some of my experiences might help.

Looking at your pictures and the manual diagrams, the latches are secured to the ABS molded plastic.
When you say that they move when you pull the lever, I'm assuming that you've already tried to tighten all of the screws and bolts to no avail.

The right saddlebag on a previous 1500 had the issue of not wanting to open due to the latch moving and the bolts not wanting to stay tightened. One time I opened it and the plastic that held the latch was broken. I ended up having to get another saddlebag as a replacement as there is no way to repair strong enough when fully broken.

Hopefully someone that has had a similar experience with an 1800 will be along soon to better help.

Good luck and keep checking back.

all the screws are tight, but where the screw tightens into the plastic mount on the right hand side, the plastic is cracked so that when you pull on the handle underneath, the whole latch mechanism moves rearward on the right had side causing the binding on the lever handles underneath.

If it's just cracked, you may be able to take it apart, get some ABS glue (I found some multi-purpose at Home Depot) and patch it up.
If you can find some ABS pipe (not PVC) then you can mix some shavings from it with the glue to make it stronger.
The glue melts the ABS in the slurry and dries a lot harder.
