Cruise Control Switch Sticks

Postby ddanger1 » Sat Apr 02, 2016 4:11 pm

Greetings all: I have a 2004 GL 1800. The cruise control switch will switch off, but I have a heck of a time re-engaging it. Tried a bit of the WD-40 to no avail. Have not removed the culprit to examine as I want to see if anyone else has experienced the same problem and what they discovered works...Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like you have the "old sticking switch" problem. Do not use WD40 as it will collect and attract dust. Use an electronics cleaner (try RadioShack or similar), and while you are there you will need a lubricant.

If spraying the cleaner in through any hole, and exercising the switch a few thousand (or less) times, should free up the switch, and you should be back to cruising. If the above does not work, you may have to take the cover off and thoroughly clean it and lubricate the switch, and then put it together again. Happy days.

PS Let us know how you get on.

I guess your talking about the CRUISE ON switch and not the cruise SET switch

My 2005 1800 has had the ON cruise control switch stuck that way for years. I do not intend to mess with it. A slight touch to the front brake lever cancels it.

How many miles on the bike? My cruse was not engaging all the time. Some times it would and some times not. My bike has over 100K on it and when I got to looking I found the bushing in the clutch lever worn out. Ordered a new one 5 minutes to install and now all is good. As you can see in one of the pictures the little push rod was almost through. You can see a hole in the back.

I have always left my cruse control button pushed in so all I have to do is hit the set button.

52000 on the bike. The on-off cruise switch is stuck ON. Not going to mess with it.

There is a section on here about freeing up stuck switches, it really easy. Bottom line, the left handle switches free really good using any electrical pressurized contact cleaner sprayed through the slots without disasembley. The right side do the same but if I recall, you need to open the switches up to do that side. Like the earlier poster stated, don't use WD-40 or anything else oily or greasey. Those just make more dirt get stuck on the... It's nice for all the buttons to go up and down properly...
