drive shaft spline lubrication

Postby collinsa » Mon May 02, 2016 6:10 am

Molybdenum or Lithium Grease or something else

Have the engine out of my wing to replace a couple of bearings in the gearbox and am doing housekeeping while bits are easily accessible

Any suggestion as to the best lubrication to coat the drive shaft splines

I believe the service manual specifies Moly.
(good luck with your spleen, by the way :D )

Moly is used typically between surfaces of drive components that don't move relative to one another. For instance, between the drive splines on a final drive output and the drive spline on the "spider" on pre-GL1800 Goldwings.

Another application is drive shafts. The drive shaft splines fit into the female splined yoke, but once it is in there, it does not move. Moly is the correct lubricant to use there, to prevent wear from the tiny bit of movement that DOES occur.

Not just any Moly though. If you went to the auto-parts and picked some up for your grease gun it's only a max of about 7 % Moly, but the Honda Moly Paste is 60%.Loctite makes one in that range as well.

If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.
