starting issue

Postby mike188 » Sat Jun 04, 2016 10:29 pm

Just bought a used 2008 wing and noticed that after turning off the engine during a stop for gas etc, when I press the starter nothing happens. If I put the bike into N, it will start. Is this something that the 1800's do? I had a 1500 and never had that happen. thanks in advance for any answers you may give me.

Clutch micro-switch likely gummed up; of course with the clutch pulled that switch should allow starting in gear. Contact spray is best, drench and work it a dozen times and spray again. You should hear these little switches click. Also ensure the wires are still connected fully to the switch; I pulled mine loose drying off after I gave my girl a bath. There are two switches there just like the brake lever, all these can get dirty and stuck. Easy repair by cleaning them, and not a major replacement issue but its usually a special order. If that fails check the side stand switch next.

Also take a moment to see to the bushings within your levers, if they wear too much the levers can be too loose to actuate the switches. New bushings are available and lots cheaper than replacing the levers. Typically cruise cuts out when clutch side is worn out.
