wobble?

Postby vernesam » Wed Aug 03, 2016 2:01 pm

I was just on a 1200 trip around the cascade loop and while riding a wobble started in the front end. does anyone know what the cause is ; everything seems to be on tight?

There are a lot of possible causes: low pressure in front or rear, axle not lined back up right after a tire change, pinch bolts or axle bolt not torqued right, etc. The cheap steering head bearings probably get the blame most of the time. A lot of riders replace them with "All Balls" tapered bearings. I have had 2 1800 wings and both of them did it. The latter of the two did it from day one with 0 miles. After I changed the front tire the first time it stopped. I believe the front end wasn't buttoned up right from the get go.

Add to what red ron said, the front tire itself. If it has begun to scallop, it will give a wobble like vibration. Balance will also contribute. First thing I would do would be a visual inspection of the tire to ensure it is still viable, and next I would check the balance. Have to take the wheel off and to a tire shop for this, or put 2 or 3 ounces of counteract or dyna beads in the tire.

While you have the bike up and the tire off, try moving the forks front to back holding both at the same time. See if there is any play in the steering head. Be careful not to rock the bike off the support that is holding it up in the air.

The rear tire can also cause front end wobble. Check both tires for wear spots and cupping, and air pressure or maybe a weight came off. A friend told me his 905 started a bad wobble on his way home from a ride. When I went to look at it I noticed that his rear tire was down to the cords in 1 spot.
