Drive shaft noise

Postby NoTippin » Wed Oct 05, 2016 4:01 pm

Since I have become more familiar with my trike, I have begun to notice a noise under the floor when I let off the throttle. It sounds /feels as if there is a lot of 'lash' or 'free-play' between the drive shaft and the ring gear & pinon. Anyone else notice this in their trike. It is a Roadsmith, Ford Mustang rear. Is this 'normal'? What fix if not normal?

Perhaps a sloppy/failing universal joint?

I have the same noise on my 2001 GL1800A 59k miles. However, mine is not a Trike. I was told to start with the drive shaft universal.

To update, I jacked up the rear to have a look. This appears to be a special 2-piece drive shaft to accommodate variable distances between trans and diff. The U joints feel tight, no slack. There is about 1/2" of rotational 'play' in the shaft before it engages the teeth of the gears. So, I guess this is 'normal' unless someone else knows different and can educate me.
