Radio Dash Lights

Postby MrKinPA » Wed Sep 08, 2010 5:52 am

Found this morning that the LED lights for the radio controls on my 2006 do not shut off. I mean, with the ignition switch full off, they continue to glow. Killed the battery when it sat for 3 weeks. All other electrics work as designed. Any suggestions?!?!

Do you mean the lights on the gauge cluster, behind the buttons on the gas tank controls, or the backlights behind the handlebar controls some people have? I suspect you have a stripped wire somewhere...does this happen regardless of if the bike has gotten wet?

These are the LEDs on the audio system controls on the tank shroud. Now, this evening, I found that if I pull the 15A fuse labeled "Battery" that the LEDs go out & it doesn't seem to affect the any other gauge lighting or other functions. Anyone know just what that fuse feeds? I think it would be helpful to know & would really help locate the problem.
I believe that the last time I had the tank shroud off to install a new air filter & a "plug & play" voltage meter that I might have pinched some wires somewhere when reinstalling the shroud. I suspect it maybe in the wiring to one of the 2 plugs which go into the audio system control panel. But before I tear it all off again to fix the problem I want to narrow down my search. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I believe that fuse is meant to keep the clock, radio presets, and the trunk remote receiver powered when the ignition is off...15 amps seems a little high for this task, but I don't know if that's the normal size fuse for that spot... I bet you do indeed have a pinched wire, and that's where I'd start.

We're thinking along the same lines & it increases my suspicion that the problem is with the wires at the plugs under the radio console. I won't get to tackle the matter until the weekend but I'll report what I find here. Thanks for helping me think it out!

Hopefully you'll be able to repair it without too much damage to that harness....it is mucho expensive!
