Clutch or Trans locked up!!!!

Postby andycapps » Sun Oct 17, 2010 7:00 pm

I've got a 2005 GL1800 and was coming back from Daytona, Fl and when I got to GA (about 250miles) had to stop to put on the Brain Bucket for Ga. Well the bike was doing fine until I stopped and put on the helmet. It wouldn't go into N or come out of 1st. Needless to say it was like I was glued to the road in that spot. Tried to rock it back and forth to no avail, I couldn't even rock it. Got a trailer and it took 5 BIG guys to help push it on to the trailer. The motor turned over with the back wheel moving but the clutch or trans is locked up! Has anyone else had this happen????

Wow. I'm sitting here trying to come up with a single point of failure in my head that could explain both problems, and I'm not coming up with anything, really. Are you sure the clutch itself is actually disengaging when you pull the lever? I'm sure you tried shifting the bike into neutral WHILE rocking the bike, right?

Let us know what you find out.

WEEELLLL this is a hard pill to swallow, but it seems to be operator error, BIG TIME!!! The dealership called this morning and said they were riding it at that time and the only thing it took was the reverse button being pushed off!!! I feel like an idiot!!! But when I stopped I don't remember hitting that button, I only stopped right on the side of the road to put my helmet on! I hope that was all there was to it, I'll "post" back after I pick it up and drive it back another 150 miles.

Andy, get yourself a new helmet, go outside and throw that one as far away as you can, it brought you bad luck, It takes a hell of man to admit an error like that, I think you are a brave man...You sure had WingAdmin puzzled ha ha..that's funny.. :D

The funny thing is, the FIRST thing I thought was, "reverse?" ...but then I figured, "nah, he would have known to have tried that." :) :)

Andy,
Thanks for the post of your "brain fart". It may just help me and a bunch of other GL riders avoid farting in our brains.
BTW, I have done some very similar stuff with my previous ride, a Kawi Nomad, like wondering why it wouldn't start and I had not remembered to raise the kickstand. A reverse is really new to me and I sure I would have (maybe still will) have done that also.

Just got my 2010 4 weeks ago had the same happen to me. Could not move it start it called the dealer they were sending a trailer over to get the bike. Made one last attempt for some reason hit the reverse button and she started. I remember when picking up the at the dealer no one there knew how to start it. The reverse button was on, took about 20 mins foe them to figure out.

I can laugh about it now, but at the time I was sweating it! I just knew the tranny or motor had locked up! It took about 5 BIG guys to push that thing on a trailer and when I say push I mean the rear wheel was locked and we had to push it like the back brake was on!

Hey......... We all make mistakes. One thing really stuck that my Salesman told me when I purchased the bike at East Coast Cycle in Bensalem...... the Reverse used when you are parked, is the perfect Parking Brake and Anti-Thieft Device. Since I use it pretty regularly for those 2 purposes, it's kinda hard to forget.
