UK Satnav coming to USA

Post by Blackwing_Jack » Fri Jan 05, 2018 12:24 pm

Hi
I'm planning to ship my UK Goldwing to the States to join a tour in Summer 2018. (2012 GL1800)
I have never changed or worked with the onboard Satnav - it contains UK mapping - and I wondered if anyone knew whether I can get US mapping and, if so, how do I install it?

Just my opinion, and you can take it with a grain of salt, but I think you would be better off getting yourself a GARMIN Nuvi or something like that and a suction cup mount to the windscreen. Keep your UK navi the same and use the GARMIN for the US routes. Of course, you'll have to purchase it here in the states, but they're cheap enough that you can get a refurbished unit for about $100 or maybe less.

I agree, buy a US Garmin for use while you are here. I (Personally) would not use a suction cup to mount. I'd get something a little more sturdy like a ram mount.

The suction cups will fall off the windscreen in about 3 days, and oops! there goes your GPS.
Motorcycle windshields have curves in them, and suction cups just won't hold tight very long.
Tried it with several different size GPS units, they all fall eventually. Heck, even in my Suburban, the suction cup turns loose in about 5 days or so.

I mounted mine dead center between the handlebars with a RAM mount system.
They have a ton of options to do the job....

I prefer the 7 inch screen versions, but a 5 inch will do you a great job.

In the follow pictures, the GPS is mounted off the right hand grip with the RAM mount kit, a double ball mount to the grip, a double jointed arm going to the left, then a 360 degree swivel to turn back and support the RAM mount that holds the GPS itself.

If you have any interest in this method, I have a series of pictures taken from all angles showing just how it was done.

If you want to mount it to the windscreen there is a ram mount ball that has 3m tape instead of the suction cup. Works very well. The mount will break before
the tape will let loose.

Be careful mounting stuff to the windscreen with tape or glue. I had a simple decal on the stock Honda windscreen and the "coating" that's on there came loose and the decal fell off......yes FELL OFF, with the coating stuck to the decal.

THe mount will break before the tape will come off. Did many 10s of thousands of miles on some very rough roads, including 400 miles of dirt road on the Trans-Labrabor-Highway tape never let loose once. The mount broke once when I tried to get an air bubble out from under the tape. The second time was when my bike
was totaled. Asfar as removing the tape it is real easy to do when you need to.

I used double sided 3M sticky tape to hold my dashcam to the windscreen.

no problems moving it, just use alcohol and dental floss.

I had it stuck to a Tulsa Tall, and to the current Optic Armor windscreens.
