2nd Gen Trailer wiring harness stays Lit

2015 GL1800 Tourer
I purchased the Big Bike Parts 52-814 ( Install Video

)
Installed running lights, brakes, turn signals all the lights work well work well. A bit too well.

When the bike is turned off the running lights turn off on the bike but stay on on the trailer.
When installing I used a tester and it showed I was getting a running light signal. When I hooked it up to the actual trailer the running lights did indeed stay on when the bike was off.

I have no clue what I missed. I've been over the install multiple times and had a friend look at it and all looks good.

Any help is appreciated.

From your description, you have used an Isolator to provide power to the trailer's lights w/o loading the OEM bike light wiring.

What has happened, is you have misplaced the proper point to connect the +12V source power for the Isolator. It must be from a Relay that is activated by the Accessory block terminal on the bike.

You have it wired direct to +12 Volts all the time....


Now, IMO, and in the opinion of some very good friends of mine, who have done this for years, Isolators are totally unnecessary as the Goldwing's wiring can handle more current than the addition of a turn light, or a brake light on the trailer.

We have all wired our bike's light wires DIRECT to the trailer's lights wire-to-wire,
Left Turn bike, to Left Turn trailer.
and so forth.

It has never, given me any trouble at all. My car and truck are wired the same way, I use LED lights on my trailers.

Compare that to me having purchased the Isolator and the 5-to-4 Wire adapter which burned up and destroyed itself about 1500 miles after I installed it....

My good friend, who's name is a secret "John Johnson" or Jobe05 as he is known somewhere, sat down at Edgefield, SC at our NASSIR8 rally and removed all of my hard efforts at making a super clean install..... he left a pile of junk on the ground, wired my lights straight thru, and that fixed the problem.

Here is a link to my trailer showing how the extra brake lights work, I have the Emergency Button depressed, so the left/right turn signals are flashing in the video.

AWESOME answer - Yes it worked putting the power on the accessory terminal.

The second issue is main those screw heads are so freaking soft. I ruined the accessory screws on my wife's f6b before. Going to over to friends house ( he's got better tools ) to fix it permanently.

uh, I hope that you are NOT using the Accessory Terminal to supply all the power to the trailer??

that is a NO NO, as the fuse for that circuit is 15 amps, and it also has to provide all the power for the bikes own circuits, and there are at least 5 other fused circuits with fuses of 5 amps or maybe more. All of those circuits are pulling power from that same 15 amp fuse.

been about two years since I looked.

please, get a relay, put the relay's coil on the accessory block terminal....
then take one lead through a 15 amp fuse to the battery +12 post.
Run the 2nd ( switched power now ) wire to the trailer's wiring circuits.

here is how it should go.

Switched Contacts for power control:

30 goes thru a 15 amp fuse to the battery +12

87 goes to the trailer's wiring circuits.

-----------------------------------------
Coil to relay:

85 goes to ground/frame/green wire

86 goes to the Accessory Terminal, this tells the relay to switch on/off

If you are sure it's wired right, I believe those harnesses have a key off hot wire (red), you could have connected the tail lights to it. That harness is supposed to be connected to B+ so if it has power on the tail light wire (brown probably) the unit is defective. Someone else had that problem and it nearly burned his bike down.

Dave,

the one that I had installed nearly caught fire, Jobe05 caught it before it had time to cause a problem. Andy and I were riding with him near his home when he saw it.

he took that crap out, and wired it straight thru. none of that stuff is needed on the 1500 and 1800 bikes.

Provided you have LED trailer lights. Probably fine with incandescent bulbs until the bike gets some years on it.
