Newby to 1800 CB secrets?

Post by blaisa » Wed Mar 14, 2018 3:27 pm

Hello all! New to the GL1800 Wing but not wings. My question is the following. I just purchased a 2002 and it has the controls on the left handlebar for a CB radio and the button on the main radio assembly for CB. It has one antenna. The previous owner stated that it does not have the CB option. Is this possible that Honda would put the controls on the bike without the option? Seems strange to me. The wife and I would love to have the CB radio option. If in fact it had it and he removed the CB portion from the bike to install on his other Goldwing which was sitting right next to this one in his garage can I buy something to add it back on and what is that component?

Thanks for the add and for your responses in advance! :)

Andy and Debbie

They all have the controls. Option if you want the CB, but you can still get one, either factory of aftermarket which would be cheaper, or watch ebay or classifieds on this and other sites. Pretty easy to install, and the hardest part is getting the antenna tuned.

I did this to my 2002 -

Bought the OEM CB - It is the best and works well -
It is a false economy to go with an after market CB - some work , some do not.

The install is pretty easy - just take your time and follow the directions-

The CB antenna you buy should be tuned well enough for short transmission in a group ride.
Mine works well for miles, and I have the SWR meter - I hooked it up and it was spot on right out of the box -0
Did I get lucky ? Maybe - But I bet yours will be fine too...

All the 1800's came with the CB controls on the handlebar. In the trunk in the middle of the bottom there is a black cover that comes off, that is where the CB and CD unit would be installed if the bike has one. But with 1 antenna I doubt it has a CB.

The only way a single antenna will work is if it is something like this: https://www.sierra-mc.com/proddetail.as ... 15ANT-SOLO

It is a two into one AM/FM/CB antenna with a splitter to connect both radios to one antenna.

Thanks. I am still looking for a CB unit and hopefully a matched antenna if anyone has one or knows anyone wishing to part with one which is in working order.

I have installed many CB units on1500 and 1800 Gold Wings and always just but the Honda antenna and I have never used a meter and all of then have worked great. A friend did buy a SWR meter when he put the CB in his 1800 and the Honda antenna was right on, we also checked 3 or 4 other 1800's with the Honda antenna and they were all right on.

Three of us got ours from ebay. We found a guy who worked in a Honda Parts Department in Michigan, and he was selling OEM units off for $400 if you bought two or more, $500 for single units. They included antennas. We bought the three, all three work fine, and install was not difficult. If I wanted another one, I would search ebay under Goldwing GL1800 parts. Be patient, there are pages and pages of items, and you almost need to stumble on what you are looking for.

Check the classified section on other goldwing sites like gl1800riders.com. I got mine from there for $350. I also, have hooked up 2 antennas and they worked great without checking with swr meter.
