Buying a GL1800

Post by saywen63 » Tue May 22, 2018 9:53 am

Have a friend who wants to buy a 2002 gl 1800 . Bike has 76000 miles and has sat for close to 3 years without beeing used .

What should we look for when we look at it ? Did this model have any specific problems ?

Thanks

I think there where 3 major recalls for the models prior to 2006, the most critical that I recall is the frames where recalled for cracking, Honda had to dismantle the bikes and run a second bead of weld in several locations of the frame!! they then stamped a dot in the frame above the VIN number to show the recal had been done. Then I think there was a recall for the Brake system (caused the brakes to drag), and I can't remember what the third one was. Hopefully someone else can shed some light, but the frame welding was the biggie!!

Thrasherg, gave some good info above.

Other then that I would recommend putting this in the proper sub forum for GL1800's.

This is the GL1500 sub forum so not sure how much people here can help you with this question.

Good luck either way and have fun!

at this point in time, the frame cracks can probably be ruled out.

if the bike has 75,000 or more miles and no cracks, it is a good one.

there were only a few bikes with this problems, the early couple of years when being hand welded.

Honda switched over to robots for the rest of the frame welds.

I looked at the frame and it is solid on my '02 and never wondered about it again.
