GL1800 Final Drive

Postby L Edwards » Sat Feb 05, 2011 8:41 am

I have a 2005 wing w/ 94,000 mi. On the center stand in 5th gear the final drive rattles. I am told it needs replacing. I am from Alabama and will be doing a tour of Nova Scotia after wing ding this year.
Does anyone have experience with this supposed problem. Should I be concerned.

First of all you should not test it on the center stand, the swing harm is not at the normal driving angle. Your best bet is to sit on it and rock it back and fort to see if there is any cluncking, when you drive do you feel any vibration on the foot pegs, if not your ok.

There is no vibs in the foot pegs and no klinking while riding in 5th.
Thanks to both replies.

With the mileage you have, it might not hurt to take it apart to grease the splines on the drive shaft, at the same time, you can change the gear oil.

Honda Valyrie's (basically the old GL1500) suffer from the same issues. To be safe, I would go with Flash2002's suggestions above. With the trip you are planning it would definitely add to peace of mind.
