REVERSE ON A GOLDWING TRIKE

Postby bisela169 » Tue Feb 22, 2011 11:20 pm

I am buying a 2006 goldwing trike, I asked if every thing worked, he said yes, but when I asked about reverse, he told me yes, but you need to warm it up a bit, until the idle comes down, before you put it in reverse, because if the idle is still fast, it won't go into reverse. What I want to know, is that true.

I have a 2006 and have never had that problem with reverse. I did learn not to use reverse as a parking brake. Dola.

My 2003 doesn't have that issue, it will go into reverse regardless of engine speed.. Reverse is using the starter motor not the engine (The engine is just running so that the alternator charges the battery as the starter motor takes a lot of current)..

I think Dola accidentally hit the reverse button when the bike was parked and then when he went to start it, he couldn't and ended up calling a garage to collect his bike!! I think his comment was a bit tongue in cheek as it was a bit embarrassing when the dealer pointed out that if he hit the reverse button again (to take it out of reverse) then everything worked as it should!! :D

No, there was no towing or garage involved. The bike was on an incline, nose down, and I shut the engine off and left the bike in reverse. After lunch, ready to go, it wont release reverse. Had to have a couple buddies push bike backwards, up hill, to release reverse. I learned to NEVER park nose down, and never use reverse as a parking brake. Nuff said. Dola.

I have heard that before. Reason being, that my '08 has trouble with reverse when it is idling fast. I did some looking on other websites and others expirenced it also.

I just bought a 1991 GL1500 Aspencade w/ Lehmann conversion and don't understand how to get it into reverse. I see the starter button has reverse written on it but don't know the procedure. Should it be in Neutral? Do you hold the starter button in or just push it? Please help a dummy out here. I've never had Reverse on a bike before. Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum.
The GL1500 has a reverse lever on the left side near your knee, you put the trans in neutral, pull the lever out and up, the neutral light goes off the reverse light comes on and you push the starter button to back the trike. Then reverse the process to put the bike in neutral.

Thanks Trike Lady. Got it. If that lever had been any bigger it would have bit me.

You don't happen to know how to open the trunk in the Lehman conversion do you?

There's an emergency release cable that is normally snaked behind the seat and passenger backrest.
On a friend's GL1800 with Lehman conversion the installer used one of the three levers under the tour box to open the trike trunk.
The middle one opened the tour box and one of the outer ones operated the trunk.

Thanks. I'll try to find the emergency. I tried the three levers but I'll try them again. I haven't even been able to open the tour box with any of them. Oh well. I'll keep trying.

Try the key in the tour box lock, turn it to the right and try all three levers, by turning the key to the right it would unlock all three storage compartments on the 1500.

Hi Guys

Lots of good info. I have a 2002 1800 trike and the reverse switch work on fast idle or when the motor slows down. Also, the trunk unlocks or locks with my remote. I don't know I the lock works or not, I just like the remote. Center latch opens touring box and latch on the left opens the trunk on my Champion Kit.
