High Beams

Postby bluewing00 » Wed Mar 02, 2011 9:46 pm

Has anyone noticed a different configuration of high beams on different years of GL 1800's? Mine, a 2010, has only the outer two lamps for high beam. I've been told some have all four lamps on for the high beam.

All four of my headlights plus two riding light go on when I turn on the high beams. In Texas, this is not illegal as DPS sent me a letter saying a headlight assembly (both lights) are considered one lamp.

How did you wire the fogs to stay on with high beams on?
Mine go out.

They are not fog lamps, They are riding lights and on same circuit as the head lights. My fog lamps are on a separate circuit. But it would be illegal and counter productive to use high beams and fog lamps.

I live on the end of a very dark road with lots of deer. So occasionally, I will cheat when it is very dark and put my high beams and fog lamps on just to throw out a little more light.

I have a 2001 GL1800 and a 2009 GL1800 and both have inside two headlights on with low beam and all four headlights with high beam. That is what I see on all GL1800's I meet. Don't know why they would have changed this in 2010. Maybe you should check with your Honda dealer to make sure something is not wrong with your bikes wiring.
As for driving/fog lights, I have Show chrome driving/fog lights on both bikes and you can wire them to either be on all the time or only when you have low beams on. It is a special plug adapter that comes with the kit that is used to change them. I believe in Illinois you can legally only have four headlights on at any time. With the driving/fog lights that makes six lights. Something to do with the maximum candlepower allowed. Besides if you have ever ridden with all six lights on I found it doesn't give you very much additional lighting. The regular high beam lights do a very good job of lighting the whole roadway up.

All four of mine light up when I hit the High Beam Switch. I think as other have suggested that you have it checked out by the dealer. When they are on along with my Fog Lights - it is like Instant Sun Shine 8-)

I'm wondering if maybe both of his hi-beam filaments in his low-beam bulbs are burnt out. Maybe try a new low/hi bulb before going to the dealer. Just a thought. Dola.

The low beam lights are not dual-filament hi/lo bulbs. they are single filament bulbs (Lo only) that just stay on when you switch to hi beam. If his are turning off, then either Honda changed something or he has a wiring issue.
