1800:which years to stay away from

Postby blackbird » Fri Jun 24, 2011 11:26 am

I am looking to buy a used 1800 to sit next to my '83A. The $20 question is, are there any particular model years of the 1800 to stay away from, or that have had excessive problems?
Appreciate any feedback those that have been there can offer!

I don't think there are years to stay away from but I believe 01-03 had frame issues.
in 06 and up they improved the cooling system, better than doubled the output of the
of the audio, added Nav and airbag.
09-10 improved the nav and added tpms.
12 many changes.

So probably the only real issue would be with the frame on the earlier models.

Some one else may have more info but hopefully this will help.

Here is some good reading on the GW. It chronicles all of the models and recalls, problems encountered for each year. Something to consider when you start looking and perhaps good to [url]confirm whether the recalls or work was every done.

All years are great as long as the recalls where performed promptly. The only one I would look out for is the frame, so look them over real good. They needed to be torn down by a dealer and then the frame taken to a local welder. Most welders do a great job. More of the problems where dealers resembling the bike to fast, but the lose clamps and fasteners would be fixed by now.

I suspect that by now the '01-'03 GL1800's that are still around don't have frame issues or have had them corrected. Not all of them needed their welds fixed. In any event, the bike can be checked by a dealer as to whether the recall was performed or not. If cost is an issue, then you'd probably find a good deal on those earlier Wings.

BTW, the '03 I had was part of the recall, but did not need the welds fixed. I traded it in after 7 years with 61,000 miles for a 2010, and still had no sign of the frame issue.

I think there were still many frame issues on '06's. (Could be wrong) By that time, though they had took care of the cooling issue and also vastly increased the effectivness of the alternator.
