I had a similar thing happen to me and found that spraying the switches with electrical contact cleaner seemed to clear the problem. It may be dry contacts or simply dirt.

I concur with what Bouvier1 said. However, you may need to go a little further. There are also some micro switches on the leading edge of your handlebars. They control shutting down the cruise if you use the brake or clutch levers. They are close to the pivot point of the levers and kinda difficult to get at, but when I sprayed them with contact cleaner, my cruise control went from being intermittent to always works. Good luck!
