gl1800 shifting hard from 1 to 2

Postby chevy2740 » Mon Nov 09, 2009 5:22 pm

Has anyone found a cure for the difficulties of shifting first to second gear without getting into neutral? It happens to me at least once or twice every time I ride my 07 gl1800. If I do not make the effort to place a little extra pressure on my heal shifter, I will go into neutral. I had the same trouble before the heel toe shifter was installed; if I did not make an extra effort to really lift the shifter for second gear. I have switched to synthetic oils, thought it might help but no luck.

I have 13,000 miles on the stock tires and I am thinking about going to the elite 3 tires? Good or bad idea? I am not complaining, this is by far the best motorcycle I have ever been on.
Thanks for any help!

That 1-2 shift is just a longer throw than the others...probably nothing you can do about it other than make sure your shifts are deliberate and complete.

About the E-3s, I've heard ok things about them, but I've heard better things about the bridgestones (G704/G709), and I'm running a bridgestone in the front (dunlop ct in the rear)

To change the speed of the first of the second is normal I have a 2003 1800cc with 18,600 miles and was the first second, it happens that I fall in neutre.Il must push harder worm up.

For tires Dunlop Elite 3, I ave elite 3 tires on my bike, a very happy with, and one of my friends do not like them.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been doing just that, making a deliberate effort to hit second gear harder. I had a 1500 gold wing and did not experience this at all. I find it better to check with others who own the same bike and see if they have had a similar issue.

The tire thing is like oil I guess, some people like one brand and others don't. I am going to try the E-3's and see how they work out. I've heard good things about them. One guy told me he had 17,000 miles on his before he changed them out and they still had some fair tread on them.

Good rides to you, I live by Sedona, AZ and it is a beautiful place to ride. 89A has 111 turns and winds through red rock mountains with a river running just off the road. Try it if you get the chance, it will give you that fuzzy feeling all over. I make that trip at least a dozen times a year, and never get tired of it. They do get a little snow in the winter sometimes.

Please except my thanks for your input. Sometimes it is just better to ask.

I Chevy 2740 For my English I use a translation software, to communicate.

Here in Quebec the season is almost over, it's very deseve.
We had a summer with rain and wind in large quantities.
To help change the speed of the first and second trials utilider a synthetic oil like Motul 5100 that I use in my GoldWing and Amsoil to, and for my next season I want to try Shell Rotella Diesel Syntetic his very popular in USA.
Contunue your beautiful trip to Arizona

Hi Chevy2740
I experieced the same, finding neutral way to many times while shifting into 2nd. However, I have found a marked decrease in the number of times I now hit neutral now that I have had the GL1800 a few months. I think likely I am just making a more concerted effort while shifting, and also shifting at slightly higher RPM's. Working much better for me now,,,but I still hit the odd 'neutral'.

I just put my bike on the center stand and in storage for the winter. But looking forward already to good riding next year as my wife and I plan a trip next spring into California then up the Pacific coast into BC.

Hi FlyBoy2121,
You have been helpful to my ego. I am very glad I am not the only one this is happening to. I did switch to the Rotella and it has helped. I am now doing as you do, by making sure I hit 2nd gear with a little more force. I hope you have a great trip to California and BC. My trips are mostly 200 to 300 miles. Good day trips are what I like to do. Thank you again for the feedback

It happened to me A LOT the first few weeks, but now I only occasionally hit neutral between 1 and 2 if I'm in a hurry in a curve from a stop, and its usually because I can't get my foot completely under the shift peg.

I ran the rotella syn, but have since shied away from it because it's not the specified weight for the wing as per the manual, but I'm thinking about using the rotella non-syn, as it is within the weight rating...not to mention there's a letter from shell floating around the internet that says the syn version has just a little too much ash in it to make the jaso spec, but the non synth actually meets the jaso spec, even though its not on the bottle (apparently shell markets a motorcycle specific brand in europe, and they didnt want the two to compete)

Thanks Gareva1 and ggrider, the oil that is best? You can get many opinions on that one. I use synthetic and still change it every 5,000 miles and add a new oil filter. It runs cooler now and seems to get about 5 more miles per gallon. Very happy!

I still hit the dreaded neutral on occasions, when I am trying to get her in 2nd. I think I get lazy and so relaxed on this dream machine. What a fun ride it is to take that big 1800 down to scraping the pegs! I find this bike to be very exhilarating and almost mind boggling. How Honda could make this 800+ pound machine so nimble and quick to respond is really something to appreciate. I'll have somewhere between 15 and 20,000 on her this year. I have over 40 years on motorcycles and still love it.

Keep up the sharing and caring, it's just good nature.

thanks, chevy2740
