Trailer hitch/Towbar

Postby danw » Sun Oct 09, 2011 1:33 pm

I am interested in building a trailer hitch for my 04 gl 1800-- does anyone know where I could get drawings or an auto cad file with the dimensions. Any ideas/thoughts suggestions on how to go about it would also be welcome.

I would look on E-BAy, I got a hitch for $130.00 with the block and ball all in chrome. I could not build one like that, to much bending , shaping and welding, too much trouble.

Yep, a guy in Georgia sells them for $139 on ebay pretty much all the time. I looked into it and can not build anywhere near as good for that price. It is a direct knock off of the Kuryakin hitch that sells for double that price. Here is one of his:

which will be gone in about fourteen hours from 10 Oct 2011, 7:30 EST - so 9 PM or so, it will be ending. He will relist tho.

If you link to the guy's store, it will show all of his current items, which includes the hitch. That way, when it expires and he re-lists, it will still be visible:

...go to hitchdoc.com and see what you come up with. I buy all my Hitches through them. My Honda GL1800, my Harley FXDL.

Do all the hitches clamp on the rear tip over bars? I'mnot sure if I like that.

It is one of the strongest mounting points on the bike, and it is not likely to damage them in any way. I don't know if they all do, but the best ones do. It gives a straight line pull from one of the most solid points on the motorcycle.

Shipping by Post would run in the neighborhood of $250, which is probably why he doesn't list it. Does Kuryakin sell in Scotland? Their hitch is about twice the price of this one, but pretty much identical in appearance. I think they price it at about $285 here in Canada and on ebay, for the Kuryakin one, but if you can actually buy from a dealer in Scotland, the price would probably not be too much worse. As these things are kind of heavy, the shipping costs are high.
