cruise control surge on 2012

Postby okstay » Sun Oct 23, 2011 8:53 pm

when i put my cruise control on, it surges abruptly. after one quick surge, it works fine. It seems dangerous and sure does wake me up! Any remedies for this? this is a 2012. My 2005 has a lag when I put the cruise on. Thanks

Assuming that the cruise has not changed from what is used on the 2001 to 2010, it sounds like it is set a little too "tight". Both my old 2002 and my present 2007 had the cruise set too "loose" as delivered, same as you say your 2005 behaves. My 2007 is now set a bit "tight" and surges as you describe, but I prefer that to a lag.

The adjustment is located on the right side, below the ignition switch. Too reduce the lag, it needs to be lengthened, to reduce the "surge", it needs to be shortened. It sounds like yours needs to be shortened about 1/2 turn.

Could you please more specific where the adjustment for the cruise control is? Thank you for the help. Chris

Here's a link to another forum with a picture of the adjustment device. Be aware that 2012 owners say it has been relocated.

Apparently Honda has gone to over setting them now, on the older models they were underset and that caused a lag.

My 2012 cruise works great. When I set it there is no surge, in fact it seems to slow down for a second and then slowly accelerate to the set speed. The only thing I did notice was an abrupt lag when coming off cruise. I learned to just keep some pressure on the throttle when coming off and now no complaints. Got 1,500 miles on it and I love it!

Mine did the same. I was able to adjust it with about 4 rotations of the adjustment barrel.

How about some info on how to adjust the cable. Such as where it is located on a 2012. Thanks, Chris

The adjustment barrel is located beneath the shelter, to the right side of the ignition switch. Same as the earlier GL1800 models.

I will invest in a shop manual for the 2012 to find out how to get to the cruise control cable. I am not sure what the procedure is to remove the top pod plastic. I just don't want to break anything. I also found out that if I hold the throttle for about two more seconds after I set the cruise, it does not surge. thanks for everybodies help. Chris

I don't mean to be picky but the cruise on my Harleys is seemless. the goldwing is light years ahead of the harley in technology but the harley does have flawless cruise.
