GL1800 Sound System (Early Models)

Post by fmcastro » Sun Nov 13, 2011 2:18 pm

In the Veterans Day Parade, in which I was involved in West Palm Beach, there were over 100 motorcycles. I took a listen to a 2008 Gold Wing with Sirius and Navigation. That sound system was light years ahead of my 2002. Is there any way to improve the older models sound? I believe that speakers alone would not help. Maybe an amplifier or something else. The '08 has six speakers and is strong in the front sound as well as the rear speakers.

Beginning in 2006, all GL1800's came standard with 6 speakers and an amp. I'm not sure of the specs of the sound system (i.e., output), but there are 4 front speakers and 2 rear + the amp. Also, the speakers are better quality than the earlier models. Two of the front speakers are mini-tweeters as well. Factory XM radio only became available in 2009, so the 2008 you heard must of had an aftermarket Sirius/XM radio.

The bottom line is (at a minimum) you'll need to add an amp and rear speakers to reproduce the sound quality of the 2006 and later models.

Contact Larry here -

I had my 03's radio done two years ago and am very happy with the results, also added four Polk DB501 speakers, what a difference.

mind you, the desired models from 2006 were used amplifer, which until then was not, then the sound is now quite different, since 2009 care has been satellite radio, I know that in 2012 the model changed the navi software.
amplifer is in the pocket of the upper trunk in the rear fender, where once was the ABS module
I give amplifera number, but as from 2006 mentions a different electrical system, larger front speakers and tweeters small
