ABS or Non ABS on a 2005

Postby cmwagner » Sun Jan 08, 2012 8:29 am

Hi

I want to add a trailer hitch to my 1800Gl - 2005 Model, before ordering the wiring harness I need to know if my bike has ABS brakes or not, I bought it 2nd Hand and no-one in South Africa can give me any indication of what I should look for which will advise whether or not it has ABS. Please can someone assist, in giving me some idea where I can look on the bike to see if it has or not.

thanks

Colin

I don't know if it would prove anything or not, but when you turn on the key, do you have an ABS light that comes on? If not, then no ABS, but if you have an ABS light that comes on and then goes off, it would indicate to me that you had ABS. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, I have checked and the only lights that come on are Neutral, Oil indicator and F1 when I turn the key on. I should have thought of that as my car lights show a yellow indicating light with the words ABS when I turn on the ignition.

Thanks again

Cheers

You're right, 2006 was the first year for ABS on the GL1800.

I have ABS on my '03.

The way to tell if you have ABS or not is look for the Pulser ring on the right side of the front wheel. Item number three in the attached picture.

Thanks All, just checked the left hand side of the front wheel behind the brake disc, does have teeth on it (on the wheel-not on a ring attached to the Brake Unit/Wheel) there is also no wire or sensor that I can see on the ring. Maybe the front wheel was changed - not sure now, could you advise me any further areas to check please, or should I take it that the bike does not have ABS brakes, based on the info above. Is it necessary to purchase a Trailer Wiring Harness, or will any Isolated Harness work which is specifically designed for the Wings.

Thanks again to all that answered my question

Cheers

Colin

I would have thought any harness would work, the ABS has no bearing on the brake light coming on or the indicators or the tail lamp.. These are the only things that go to the trailer wiring loom so any Goldwing harness should be fine..

sorry, but the ABS was mounted in 1.8 from the beginning, I had a 2002 model with ABS, Trailer and installation of lighting, has nothing to do with the ABS, the funniest thing is that just for gl 1800 with ABS had a slip and I was lying, I already have 7-th, since 2001, maybe a coincidence, but this is just a motorcycle and two wheels!

I forgot to add, if the moto is ABS, in the instrument panel for 2005 under the first airspeed indicator on the right side of the ABS and the light is red if there is no ABS moto of this control is not there!
