Right side switch cluster assembly for 2006 GL1800

Postby Teddybear06 » Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:56 pm

When I push in the Cruise Control On/Off switch to "On" it does not stay down and so I'm not able to set the Cruise speed. The RVS On/Off switch works fine when I push it in it stays down, push it again and it comes up. If I can't repair the switch, where can I get the right switch cluster for a decent price? Any help would be appriciated.

This is a fairly common problem, you need to open the switch housing (2 screws accessed from underneath the cluster) and then spray a contact cleaner into the top half of the housing (where the switch is located) to free up the switch. There is a small metal link that locks the switch in and it gets gummed up with dirt and grease, by spraying a contact cleaner on the switch, it dissolves the grease and lets the switch work normally, I then spray some WD40 just to leave a film on the switch to protect it from water and put the housing back together.. It's a bit fiddly but not difficult and most people do NOT need to replace the cluster, which is quite expensive!!

Gary,

Many thanks for your quick response. The cleaning worked like a charm. You saved me big $$$ as I rely on the cruise control for my long trips. I'm glad to be a member and again I'm greatful to you!

If like me you have the extended warranty get it replaced. My resume button has become intermittent. The dealer will replace the cluster
under the extended warranty. Mine is an 06 as well. Nothing wrong with fixing it but I will take new anytime.

Unfortunately I did not have the extended warranty. The only way to get it was before the Manufacture warranty ran out. Lucky for me, there are knowledgeable individuals on this site to help me through when a problem developes.

I have asked this question in several forums around the web. I've gotten replies, but no answers.

Will the assemblies (left and right) from 2004+ Wings work on a 2003? I think that '04 and later are back-lit. If the power for that comes from someplace other than the two large plugs then MAYBE it will work... there would just be no place to plug in those lights.

I'm finding on-line several assemblies for the newer models but not for my '03. I would appreciate a definitive answer.

I pressed in the cruise control button when I bought the bike, and have not touched it since. When riding in a group, I ride by button, and when alone, I just set it and go. If it burns out, it will be replaced under warranty.
