new seat for two

Postby M&T82WING » Thu Feb 18, 2010 10:18 pm

Hi everyone Mark & Tamilee here
We want to put a new seat on our 82 inerstate we looked at one at JCWhightney the one we like is a double bucket style with a driver back rest. We never had any problems with them before we are wondering are they any more or better seats out there. I hunt eBay everyday sometime twice a day search craigslist and of course Goldwingdocs but havent found one better so befor we send the order in does anybody have one like the one we are looking at or better?

Has anyone tried to take apart the existing seat and install a gel pad? Would that be extremely difficult?

One of my friends traveled with a gel pad. Hated it. Someone else told me about WalMart gel pad for $20. He loves it. It looks alot like the 'butt buffer'. It is a honeycomb or waffle looking seat pad. He said the only thing wrong was the 'pockets' are open upwards. When it rains, you have 200 puddles to sit in. I bought one and turned the pad upside down (inside the seat cover). I haven't tripped with it yet, but first impressions are impressive!!

I was turned onto the Walmart pad 2 years ago by an older gentleman on a Wing. Went out and got one for my Suzuki Intruder LC and swear by it. I had to give up the pad to my passenger the first time she tried it and had to get another one for myself, then on a trip forgot mine and bought another one. I'm picking up my 98 SE in a few weeks and have a 1000 + mile ride home on her and will definitely be using one of these. Probably 15 or 20 people have gone out and gotten one after I let them try mine. Only one person has said they weren't impressed. (He's a **** anyway) If you've got money to burn, you can get a butt buffer. If not, get one of these. and do turn the inner pad over so the openings are facing down...

I was wondering if you guys could enlighten me on this pad. I searched walmart online, but didn't really see anything. Where in the store is this pad located or in which department?

Thanks

The seat pad they are talking about is found in the automotive section at Wally world. It is actually a pad for a car seat but works well on your Wing's seat.

Well I live in the midwest and I went for another look see around. The stores out here have no gel pads/seats for cars. Just the foam crap. I guess I'll keep searching... Any additional info would be appreciated..

The pad is not really a "gel" pad. It actually is a foam pad. It does kind of feel like a gel pad but is actually foam. Sorry I can't give you the name or markings on it. The pad is with the bike at a friend's garage waiting for parts to come in tomorrow. I actually didn't buy my pad but received it as a gift while I was on a ride with some fellow GWRRA members. This pad has been talked about on the GWRRA website and is claimed to be a comfortable pad at a cheap price.

Found this on the GWRRA website

SEAT COVERS

For about $18.77 "SOME" Wal-mart's sell a auto seat pad that works wonders on the Gold Wing. It's called "PVC Seat Cushion" Made by "Roadmaster"
I've only found it at Batesville, Conway and North Little Rock. Some others don't carry it. It even has a handle to carry. It has a zipper for removal and cleaning.
You also have the ability to cut and custom sew your shape. But I think it is just fine the way it is. Those gel pads can cost over $100.00.
You can purchase this cushion on their website if you can't find it at http://www.roadmasterusa.com/seatcushions.php The cost is$21.99 on their site ~ $18.77 at Wal-mart.

Is this the one your speaking about? I tell you, I've looked everywhere and can't find one for sale... Not to mention the roadmasterusa site doesn't exist either.

That sounds like the beast. I was just at the bike this evening. Got it all fixed up so I will be riding it home on Friday (rain is forecasted tomorrow) I will look for any brand name makings on it. I will also run by my Walmart tomorrow and see if I see one there. One of the things I have noticed with any seat pad is it helps to have a variety. Start running without one for until you hit your first stop then put a pad on until your next stop. Then change pads or go bareback again. You will notice with each change the "hot spots" will move around and you will be able to go for a longer time. Because of a recent surgery I need to have a little extra room for "the boys" and being able to trim the pad helped too.

I went to the local Walmart store and here is a picture of the seat pad on the shelf:

Here is a picture of the pad itself:

Finally this is what the actual pad looks like. It is sort of an egg crate design. The first thing you want to do when you get one is turn it over so the dimples face down. That way if it rains the water will drain away and not make a bunch of puddles for you to sit in.

Had to go to WalMart for some other items last night and thought I would check the automotive dept. for that gel/foam (?) pad. Well. I found it. Cost around $20.00 with tax. This is in Naperville,IL. Put it on my bike but havent tried it out yet. I didn't notice a zipper but, then again, i didn't look at that closely. So, bottom line, it's here in the Western 'burbs of Chicago.

Well 4th walmart was it, finally found them! Since I've never had anything to compare it to, seem's fairly comfortable. I do agree that switching back and forth from pad/no pad would be the trick for long trips. Thanks to all for the help!
