1987 1200 Interstate parts

Postby rdraidr » Sat Oct 06, 2012 10:33 pm

If you know which years and models you can use, I have a bunch of extra parts from building one bike from two. Let me know what you are looking for and send me an offer. I'd rather the parts go to you good guys.
I have:
Some engine parts - easier to tell you I don't have the block and two pistons. I have everything else; stator, starter, fuel pump, coils...
Radiator, fuel tank, master cyliner (front and rear),
A good frame - straight
Body parts - fairing, false tank, trunk, saddle bag, lid, sidecover, fenders, bag frame,
Electrical - harness, gauges, lights,
Emblems
Send me a PM.

Water Pump is sold. I have a brand new speedo cable - still in the packaging - fits an Interstate, not Aspencade.

Got an '85 1200A in my shop, belongs to a friend. Wanting electric fuel pump, pump cut-off relay and tilt switch. Relay and tilt switch are located under the coils, two small square units. Got them still?

I know I have the fuel pump and the relays. I'll have to check on the tilt switch; I know what it is, just not where I put it. I'll get back with you when I verify that I have them. To be clear, the "cut-off" relay is one of two for the coils; the pump uses the pulse of one relay to fire, not cut-off.?

The Honda parts picture that I've seen(for ordering parts)shows the "cut-off" to be on the right, under the coil. The one on the left is not even listed anymore, so I presume it is the "tilt" switch. Whatever the pump relay is, it does pulse the ground connection to speed up or slow down the pump. I'm just not sure which one of the two it is, so my plan is to replace both. Hopefully, one is the culprit that is keeping the pump from working. Have an aftermarket pump on it now, that works with direct power, but I'm not sure that it is compatible with Honda's power relay. It may not be designed for varible speed.

I recall there being two relays, one for each coil, of which one, the one that feeds the rear coils that is used to pulse the fuel pump. The pulses increase or decrease depending on motor speed from the pulse generators; located in the timing belt area for 85-87 wings. The idea is that the tilt switch will cut off the pulses if the bike is tilted too far over, i.e. laid-down. The tilt switch has been a problem for others; I'm told it's a mercury-filled switch that somehow dries out.

The one other point to make is that there is a pressure switch in the pump that determines not to continue running if the parameters of pressure to the floats are met. I know it works.

I re-routed my fuel pump to run on switched power out side the relay; some on this board don't advise this maneuver, but if you check, you'll find strings on how-to. I've had no issues since, by the way.

If I can get the pump to work as Honda designed, that's my preference, as the relays and tilt switch are good safety precautions. The owner asked if the pump could be hooked up to run direct, which I told him "yes", but again, I'd like to fix the problem, rather than route around it. I'll take any and all parts that might be necessary to make a proper fix.

That's fine. I'd like to find out what you find, so I can take mine back to original. I believe the relay is working; the coils fire, but I could not get fire to my pump. You can simply "jump" the pump direct to the battery to check it; you may have already done this.

The tilt switch is simply a continuity check.

I'll check on the items I have and get back with you.

I have a 1986 Goldwing Interstate (1200) but it is missing the engine oil dipstick. Do you have one and if so, any ideas if it is the same as for the 1986? I would think it should be, but... Thank you

I'll verify the part number, but I'm pretty sure it is the same. Yes, I have one.
