WANTED: Trailer Hitch for 1986 GL1200a

Postby Quarteg » Mon May 27, 2013 3:37 pm

I am looking for a trailer hitch for my 1986 GL1200a. I know there are many different styles and I am not picky. I just want one that works. :D

Thanks in advance,
~ John

That is what I am looking for. I am looking at a used one right now for $50. Hopefully that pans out.

Because I am purchasing a used one, does anyone have directions on how to install it?

I found one on Craigslist for $50. I should have it early next week (first week of June 2013).

That said... It is used and without instructions so I may be stuck trying to figure out how to mount it.

Any help mounting it would be greatly appreciated.

Each hitch is going to mount differently depending on how it was designed. That said, you might be able to figure it out just by looking at it.

Thanks. I should receive it early next week and if I get stuck I will post plenty of pictures and several questions.

The nice thing is, is that it came off of an '86 so I hope that gives me a slight advantage. :D

Alright my friends I am stuck. I think there are pieces missing but the previous owner doesn't think so. The two long bars are interesting at best. Both have a slight bend near their ends.

I am attaching 2 pics. One of the parts, one of the back of my bike with the saddlebags off.

My first guess is that the two long bars go diagonally across the top of the saddle bag brackets to connect to the two horizontal tabs. Beyond that, I have nothing...

It is made by Markland and the Internet has been of little help. I am still searching, but thought I would come to where more knowledgeable people than myself reside.

So I made it work using parts from the old hitch. I went diagonal with the long bars (black) that came with the hitch. From there I took the two long (chrome) bars I had from the old one and went vertical with those. Now I have the hitch setup to stay on the frame. I then had to take two smaller pieces (also chrome) and go diagonally with those. To clamp them to the hitch frame I used hose clamps for cooling systems on cars. With a spare piece of rubber laying around, I put that around the hitch frame then bolted the clamps in place. Wha La trailer hitch is assembled and working.
