WTB: a really cheap bike <400cc! THE $500 CHALLENGE!

Postby Tugboat » Thu Dec 26, 2013 10:45 am

The $500 24-Hour Challenge! This is a long shot, but I'm posting here anyway...

How far can our team go in 24 hours on a bike that costs us less than $500? I’m aiming to find out this coming May. My team is going up against five others in a mad dash around Nashville that will test our riding ability, our wits and our mechanical skills.

So we’re looking to buy a bike for around $300 since we’ll have to replace some stuff. Rules dictate that it needs to be under 400cc. If pre-1984, it doesn’t need to have a title. It also doesn’t need to have good brakes or tires, or look decent. Tank can be rusty or dented, battery can be missing, chain can be rusty… It doesn’t even need to run in its current state! I’d like to avoid having to get into the motor though. And it would be great if it were less than 500 miles from Nashville, TN. Got something (or know of something) that fits the bill?

Potential candidates:
Ninja 250
CM400
CB400
XS400
KZ400
GS400
GN400
CB360
CB350
CMX250 Rebel
Virago 250

I have a complete early 70's Honda 360 available. Engine not running, but not seized, I can turn it over with the kick starter. Missing side covers or so but not much else. Things like the handle bars are rusty.
PM me if interested. It is cheap..

Won't really help you but rather meant to encourage you. I bought my 1980 GN400t for $550 and it ran perfectly with no faults except a slightly bent fork.

craigslist is your friend.
Finally bought the same bike that brought me so much joy as a kid from the backseat.

Hey thanks man. Yeah, it seems like there are some good deals up your way but most are too far to drive to get. I've already been to Lexington KY from Nashville once, only to be stood up and not even get to see the bike in question. Of the six teams participating, three still don't have bikes so I'm not panicking yet - but I can't tell you how much I wish we were past this stage!!! Keeping my fingers crossed.....
