Seeking a replacement CB for my 2010 GL1800

Postby tbmhansen » Wed Apr 01, 2015 10:09 am

2 summers ago I carried a small ice chest in my trunk for a week long trip. The whole trip it went un-noticed that there was a leak. 2 weeks later my cb went on the blink and I found it floating (literally!) in the small sealed enclosure at the bottom of the trunk!!!

I have been searching and cannot afford $600 for the OEM replacement. I tried an Bike MP3 unit and it worked for a week! I contacted customer service and they said my harness must be bad with no other solutions offered :( Everything checked out from a wiring perspective (I was using their harness).

If anyone has any suggestions...please feel free! Otherwise...still looking!

Thanks,
Tony

I suspect the water has gotten into more than just the CB unit but into the wiring connectors. I would check every connector in each hookup to insure no corrosion. I wonder if the water could actually get into the wire, I really don't think so but again a thorough cleaning of all connectors is in order. You might have to replace all wires leading to the CB from under the seat and don't forget the antennae wires and connectors.

You might check with salvage yards for a good GB unit.

Or you could send it to Sierra Electronics, they repair the CB for a fixed fee, I believe. Check them ou.

Thanks Redial/Harvey,

Solved my problem...(the old radio had already been checked out and the board was fried) I installed a 2014 radio with and additional patch cable since the newer bikes no longer cable to the front of the bike. Picked it up new for $400 -vs $600-800 for the 01-10 model. Control Cable wasn't a major deal and the only other fix was the power cable, it was about 10" shorter lol
Quick SWR check and I am back on the road :)

Again thank guys!
