Hello Yelims73,

Just wondering how many kms or miles did you have on your original 85 prior to wanting this rebuild?
I understood those old GW's run on for many, many hundreds of thousand miles and kms.

it has only 26,000 miles on it...... but i took it to a shop and they said the piston rings need to be redone as well as getting it bored they also cant find pistons or rings for it as it is an older bike so I was just trying to find another engine to put in it. It is burning oil real bad to the point that the oil had saturated the air filter as well as running out of the pipes.... I was told I blew the piston rings.....I just bought the bike in a privvate sell and the previous owner had redone the valves it made great compression when i test rode it. on the way home with it from california....i live in AZ....it started smoking as i had already given the man my money I kept the bike and figured i would fix what was wrong with it and go on from there.....

I'm sure you'll find some rings or parts you need. Just keep the faith and they'll turn up.
Makes me kinda uneasy as well as I have an old 85' LTD 1200 and would also wonder
if I need to get parts.
As is, I'm having a 'new' problem where I can't get the motor to start. The starter turns as
does the engine, but no ignition. Puzzling. I'm about to check for spark as I just learned how
and where to take the side flange off in front of the plugs. Very recessed plugs, I noticed.
I'm not sure what type of socket I need because I have several and none fit . ie. regular
spark plug socket (too big), resistor socket (too small), swivel socket (meant for plug
removal- also looks too small) ????? Therefore, I'm still trying to find the right socket.
Any ideas?

Hi... yes.. thanks. The 18mm socket does the job on the sparkplugs.
