Shipping will cost you either way you get it, so I'll suggest onlinemetals.com or one of the other online sources.
Barring that, take a trip to your local steel supplier. You can sometimes take a look in their scrap bin pretty cheap. Buying a few feet, you can usually buy the whole stick (or a larger than needed piece anyway) for about the same price as the smaller piece.

Good luck.

Local steel supply here is special order and minimum purchase of $100.00... POOH said Winnie.
I was hoping someone here had some extra tubes left over and could recoup some costs.
It's a project that does not need to be done but would be beneficial in saving panel scratching.
For where it's going and it's use, prefer one piece. It also must be near non-bendable once in place.

I've looked at used luggage rails, WAY to costly.
McMaster-Carr... prices are OUT of sight!!!
'Online Metals' and 'Metals Depot' also are high due to shipping @ $20.
Zoro online metals is reasonable and "IF" i must, I'll go that route.
Flea markets and yard sales produced nothing usable this summer.

Since this is a prototype I may just go with 3/8" gas/water pipe.

As a tinkerer...I understand your pain.
So many ideas done in cardboard instead of the 'right' material.

Might try sleeving 2 different diameters of the same stuff to get some rigidity out of it. Say the Home Depot 1/2" tubing with a piece of 3/8" inside it. Might not be a perfect fit, but once bent/welded, it might give you the strength you need. I've done that with trailer hitches for the Concours...in the areas where the most stresses are, slid in some square tube or stock in the an area and bent it. Never had one break, and I'd sold several dozen.

Either way, good luck. Any car builders or racetracks nearby? (short track/dirt or the like?) Airports?
There's always eBay. Bought 4' of 3.5" square tube .250 wall that was cheaper even with shipping than my local supplier was for the 4' I needed.

Not all the time, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
Seriously, good luck.

Funny you should say, yah car racer next door, stock car.
And he's NOT a tinkerer or any kind of a builder, just a replacer.

He needed a inch pound torque wrench, I said I have one in 1/4".
Handed it to him, he looked and looked then said, Where's the foot pound reading? Course I knew he was josh'n.
I said it's an inch pound torque wrench. He says, is this 16 to a pound or 12 inch to the foot?
I reached for it, looked at it and took my toy back. If he want's to KEEP playing with me, he's gotta find someone else to borrow tools from. Too bad for him, I have plenty of tools he SURELY could use, or abuse?
Back in the 80's Penske wanted me as engine builder for his 3rd car... ya, I got tools. ;)
