Postby lyman54 » Tue Apr 12, 2011 8:54 pm

Looking for a water pump for a 1981 GL1100. Can't even find a new one anywhere on the web. If anyone knows who sells them could you steer me there. Thanks.

I got mine (cost me $116) from Direct Line Parts. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend that vendor (read what I wrote about my experience with them here), if you are in no great hurry to get the item (i.e. can deal with waiting for 3-4 weeks for your part to show up), I did find that they were the cheapest online vendor.

My local Honda stealership had them in stock, and was happy to sell one to me for only $235. Uh, no thanks.

Thanks, I just tried but they don't have any. I found one in Arizona for for about $165, they want $70 to ship it here to Canada. A little unreasonable.

I looked at a few places on the web, the cheapest place I found was also one of the most reliable and respectable - Cyclemax Ohio. You can see it (and order it) here for $126.

Thanks very much. I ordered the water pump and thermostat. Came to $157, you saved me a lot of money. Good thing also the CDN $ is at par. I really appreciate your help.

I have one that I had replaced on my '81 GL1100... I noticed that the seals were replaceable and the bearings also were able to be pressed out and replaced.... if yours has no damage to the impeller, maybe (if you aren't in a big hurry, you can bring it to a machine shop and have the bearings/seals replaced and just rebuild it.... I had put my old one back in the box just for that purpose... I will go dig it out and see if I can ID the seals and bearings for some identifiable information...

Thank you Rich. I just ordered a new one with a thermostat. Might as well do them both. Ian

All the parts to rebuild the pump are available.I rebuilt a 1100 pump ONCE.After I finished,it rolled off the bench, landed on concrete and cracked the composite impeller.$80 down the drain. The second one was metal impeller design with bad bearings but I got gun shy and just replaced it.

Don't you hate it when that happens. So you bought a new one and it had bad bearings? I never changed one, but thanks to info here I'll be able too. I just bought the bike for $900. The Vetter fairing was a nightmare of wiring the owner had made so I pulled it off and will put a regular headlight on sans fairing. No choice but to fix things, couldn't even sell it like it is. Good thing I like doing that stuff.

I have the pump, it has a shaft end seal/bearing with the number NTN 6000LX on it, but I can't find the NTN part listing or specs on it... Since it has the LX suffix, it should have a bronze bushing in it.... I have E-mailed NTN for detailed info on the part.... the front of the pump (impeller side) has what looks to be a ceramic spring tensioned seal, much like the ones used by pool pumps to seal the shaft of the motor into the impeller housing.... as soon as I am able to separate the two pieces I will post additional info/pics... here is what I have so far:

NTN 6000K seal/bearing
NTN 6000K seal/bearing

A peek at the impeller side...

The only other things that would be needed after ID'ng the parts would be the O-rings for the re-install, and I am sure that those can still be found with no sweat...

lyman54,

Save your old pump and maybe after we locate the parts, we can start a GL1100 Water Pump Exchange program.. where we exchange our old pumps for ones that have been rebuilt??

The one with bad bearings was a old one.The ceramic seal is correct, but it has to be removed to get the shaft and bearing out(damaged it).I called our local bearing shop with the NTN number,id,od and thickness and they matched it up.$24 each.Just a all around bad experience.Don't forget to replace all the "O" rings at the pump and front cover.

The two O rings required on the pump are included in the gasket kit sold that includes all the dowel O-rings and the front cover gasket.

I too have my old composite impeller pump still sitting on a shelf if anyone wants it. :)

If the shaft isn't frozen like mine is I'll take it... I want to rebuild at least one pump to have as a standby replacement.... I am determined to do this now.....

I also ordered the seal kit so should be good to go. I'll save the old one if anyone wants it.

Here is the exploded view of the pump... parts are in order they are assembled ...

GL 1100 Water Pump Exploded View
GL 1100 Water Pump Exploded View

Both the front and rear bearings are NTN 6000LX The spacers are steel tube and the front seal is ceramic (which should be fine if given a light polish on a glass plate with some fiber optic grade polishing paper) which may or may not need replacing depending on wear patterns... there is also a rubber "seat" for the ceramic disk set into the back side of the impeller assembly, this probably is used to cushion the disc as it rotates and allow for heat related expansion of different materials..

Now to find all the equivalent replacement parts... the press in steel cup (goes just behind the impeller and positions the spring for the ceramic seal) is the only part that I am sure is not available so extra care has to be taken when driving the front bearing out (I put a dent in mine, but I hope I will be able to work it out before reassembly).

So here is the pump, now to find the bearings and possibly the front seal.

Here are closeups of the ceramic seal, ceramic disc, the backside of the impeller and the bearings...

The only thing I haven't shown is the small circlip that goes on the end of the impeller shaft after the pump is re-assembled that keeps the shaft from being pushed out by the spring on the ceramic seal...

OK here's the part numbers:

Bearings are SKF 6000 2RS JEM, Deep Groove Ball Bearing, 10 mm ID x 26 mm OD x 8 mm Wide; Double Sealed (Contact); ABEC 1; Steel Cage; C3 Clearance; Deep Groove Design (205)

Ceramic seal is Honda Part # 19217-657-023 which is also listed for a CX 500 Turbo as well as others...

Seal is somewhere in the neighborhood of $35, bearings about $12 each.

So assuming you will still have to order a O-ring and gasket set to do the job and the best price I found for a new water pump (19200-MG9-681 (replaces 19200-371-010) was $118 (not sure if there was additional charge for tax or shipping) from http://www.westernhonda.com in Scottsdale AZ. You can save almost 60 bucks doing the rebuild yourself.. with the right sized tools (for driving out the seals and bearings) it should only take about an hour at most to clean, prep and rebuild your old pump with the new parts (assuming you have a perfectly good impeller)...

So there you have it, a real choice for a water pump on your 1981 GL 1100...
