Wanted : Carb Butterfly rod or carb

Postby FADM Stern GNSF » Sun Sep 25, 2011 12:35 pm

I currently have a 1975 set of carbs on my bike (78 engine) but one of the carbs has a broken butterfly rod (right side carb, engine side rod). I am hoping to either get a replacement rod or the whole carb if need be. (carb is marked 755A NO7).

I have also heard that the best set to put on would be a 76 set, so I guess that is an option. At thi point I just want to be able to get the carbs on so I can start it (I have never started it). Since Im new to the Wing I dont really know the ins and outs of the carbs as per there year (except I think 75-79 will all fit my bike ?)

Appreciate any help anyone can give me

Replacing a shaft on any of the carbs is pretty involved. I would suggest looking for a
replacement carb. A new carb set is and option but buying just one should be cheaper.

Well, actually getting it out wasnt very hard, one split ring (where it broke) and then the two screws holding the buffterfly valve to the rod and it comes right out. I know finding a rod will be hard, and I am even willing to get a whole carb (believe its #3, right side rear carb) but it seems 1975 ones are reallt hard to find. From what I have been told, 75-79 carbs will all fit on the eniging, and 76 were the "best carbs" ?

So, at this point Im hoping to find a 75 carb, but no luck so far. May have to replace the whole rack if I can even find one of them that wont cost me an arm and a leg.

I am guessing the rods are all the same, (75 - 79). The screws are "braded" at the plate.
Will they go back in and be able to torque down enough to hold?
75 to 77 carbs are very close to being the same, 78 & 79 are a smaller throat diameter
and and would have less performance potential in my thinking.
Do make sure to keep all 4 carbs the same type.

I will check to confirm all 4 are 75's (never though of that). As for the rods, they are the same diameter and length, but NOT the same. Someone sent me a 76 rod and the screw part is on the opposite end, and the "press fit" part is a far different shape. Her is a pic of the broken one (75) and the one sent me (76) below it

With the "ring groove" lined up, the 75 has the nut on the left (nut on the link end), while the 76 has it on the right (nut on the ballancing junction).

I should have said this differently. The rods are different on all four carbs, but they
stay the same for all the years. I think the rod you have is not from a #3 carb. (the right
rear). Any year should work fine.

Well, its sure hard for me to tell if this rod if from the wrong carb, but I did check the rest of the carbs. They are all 755A and the rod I was sent is different than ANY of them (even the intake ones). While the rods seem the same length and diameter, the press fit ends differ. I do have a 78 set coming, and will see when I get them if any of those would fit, and if they do maybe I can try to locate rods from other years to get the 75 set complete again.

Thanks all for the help, your are the best :)

Been looking at this more and getting more confused. Are you sitting on the bike when
you say the carb is right rear? #3 carb is the one by the fuel pump. I think that the bottom
shaft in your picture is the correct one for the #3 carb. I have both 78 and 77 carbs here
and both has a shaft that looks very similiar to the bottom shaft in your picture.

Hope this helps more than hurts!

Yes, I always refernce a parts location to "sitting on the bike looking forward (or if you like, standing behind the bike looking at it). Yea, its the one right near the fuel pump, one end of the rod connects to the throttle linkages (thats the nut end) and the other has a press fit piece that mates with the #1 carb to allow ballancing.

Now, it is possible that the member that sent me the rod from the 76 carb may have pulled the wrong one, although he is sure it was from the proper carb. I guess when the 78 rack shows up I will be able to confirm this either way, and it sure would be nice to find out they are all the same which would make finding a replacement a bit easier.

Have you found the 78 carbs?? as you said in last post "when the 78 carbs get here"., I have been checking some local places I know, may have found a set of 78 as well as possible 75's. He ask me about the 78's wanted to know what number the 78's are ask 770's??? I have no idea as have not been around a gl1000 in 25 years....

Yes, I do have a set of 78 carbs comming (thanks to a forum member) so once I get them rebuilt I will be back moving forward on the bike. I do still want to find a replacement rod just to get the 75 rack complete.
