With all the bodywork off it will be a LOT easier to give everything a good cleaning. Also easier to get at the timing belts if you can't verify their age/mileage. New rad hoses would be good....and change all the fluids......oh, and check the stator connection near the battery

Thanks for the heads up. This will be my 4th bike an I have always updated all the fluids before I call it road ready. the charging system is putting out about 14 volts at idle. But I really didn't realize how much trouble the timing belts could cause. I wasn't going to change them as this bike has less than 20k in mileage. But who knows when they were last inspected or changed. Guess it is time to get some belts just to be safe. Any tips on changing these?
Welcome law, you need to remember your new toy is 33 years young and has spent most of its life doing nothing. Your timing belts are critical to your engines survival. It least your bike at least runs. Time to run seafoam or similar cleaner to clean up the carbs, if I were you I would check all bearings, brake calipers, flush and inspect master cylinders, change fork oil, tighten steer head bearings, inspect swing arm and grease same, apply " moly 60" or equivalent to final drive splines, drive shaft ( both ends) grease up your center stand and inspect this area for rust and corrosion, check stater plug connection ( 3 yellow wires just left of battery) pull speedo and tach cables and clean and lubercat, clean all plug connections you can find and install new dialetic grease, flush and clean final drive and add new oil, check fuel tank for rust, new fuel lines and filter after cleaning tank. That is enough, I will get off my suggestion soap box and go find me a good Bloody Mary and breakfast. Again welcome and almost everything you wish to do you can find good tutorials in the "how to do" section of this site. Please keep us posted on your progress.
napa has the correct good quality belts your bike requires. sorry but I don't have the belt part number immediately available. check Google, timing belts for 1982 honda gl1100 and you should be able to get your part numbers. they are about $25 each if my memory serves me correctly.

Yes the weather in Michigan (the mitten) Can get tricky.
We do have a saying, If you don't like the weather. Wait 10 mins it will change.

Well, except perhaps Ohio, right? Just come a bit east to one of the best states for bike riding.
Actually, thinking about this, I have to be fair and qualify my statement: My main experience with Michigan has been travelling THROUGH it to get somewhere else - i.e. up through Detroit to Sarnia to get to Canada mainly, although I did also do some work in Detroit for some time.
