Receiver??

I'd like to purchase a receiver for my 89 1500 but would like to know your thoughts on which would suit my needs. I am planning (with input from the group) to carry a single mountain bike on a receiver mounted rack once installed. Possible? Tongue weight on these would be approximately? Bike is 32lbs or so plus the rack (unknown weight). May have to fab something to keep it under. What do you think.

I have a receiver hitch on my 96' Wing that I use to pull a Bunkhouse trailer. Tounge weight with the trailer is approx 25-35lbs. So I wouldn't think the weight you listed would be too much..my concern would be the width of the mountain bike being carried...depending on how you mount the mtn bike to the Wing....

I concur. The weight of the bike is rather insignificant. Just be sure your fabrication is solid. I suggest you mount the bike in a very vertical position, rear wheel cradled at the bottom, front wheel up high, perhaps over the trunk? A simple bungie cord between the front wheel and the frame's downtube ought to keep it from flopping about whilst in transit?

The width could be a problem for sure. Not only for squeezing between things but the wind resistance would nullify the milage we all enjoy out on the road. Mounting it vertically is an option although a slightly more difficult one. Keep in mind that the bike weights 32lbs but that the rack will also bringing the total up over 60lbs. Still alright?

Well, my receiver holds up my brother's 240 pound body when he steps on the hitch. I suspect you'll be able to fabricate some kinda cradle that will hold the bike vertical and still weigh in light enough to work. If in doubt, spend the extra money and go with aluminum to build the rig.

Your receiver hitch may well be able to hold up your brother..BUT...what happens when you are driving down the road with your 240 LB brother still standing on the hitch (please don't try that!!

) It's not how much it can hold, but the weight that you are applying to the hitch while driving (normal tounge weight for me is about 25-35lbs). Too much weight would cause the front end to feel light and even possibly lift (not a good feeling). At 60lbs...I really don't think you would feel the difference...but then I never tried myself....

No, I wouldn't ride like that, lol. Fact is, I'd done some repair work to the trunk's framework at the same time that I changed my factory shocks to the 416s. Had my bro bounce up and down on the hitch solely to hear the new-found QUIETNESS that I'd never heard before.
Regardless of all that, I'd suspect you could carry 100lbs on that hitch without incident, though I've not tried it myself, and I, too, would suggest some kinda trial runs before embarking on any roadtrip with that kinda weight back there.

Thanks for the compliment. If you're looking at my avatar, well, that's an old pic, you might take a gander at my albums to see my new system. The Joe Florida LED system has some animation to it as well...but as far as staying on the good side of all them LEOs, that's just a matter of paying close attention to the DOT laws.
Myself, I looked at ALL the laws regarding road-going vehicles and auxiliary lighting. Here in Kansas, the DOT laws regarding vehicular lighting are pretty specific...even to a fault. The letter of the law says that the lights cannot face directly outward in any direction to such and such brightness (I don't recall the numbers off the top of my head,) however the lights may point downward without prejudice. Basically, they don't want to be able to see the bulbs (source) of the light(s.) Also, while in motion on a DOT street, the lights may NOT be animated, not blinking, changing colors, fading in/out, or strobing in any way. I push the limit with my bike, as it is my rolling billboard, people see my bike and they want me to light up theirs.

I assume all receiver systems are not created equally. Is the one I should look at more than another? Keep in mind that the receiver to stinger connection must not be in the vertical position as some I have seen are. Thanks.

I'm not even sure who made my hitch...it is a receiver (horizontal). got mine off Flea-bay a while back...no issues with it at all!

The tongue weight of my trailer is 30 lbs as well, and my bike handles that well. Keep in mind however - your mountain bike may weight 30 lbs, but that's when you're stopped. When you're riding with the bike strapped on the back, there is going to be a heck of a lot of wind resistance pushing that back backward, and levering much more than 30 lbs of force on your hitch system. Make sure whatever you put in there is hefty and well-secured to your frame.

I hear ya. Last week I looked for a receiver and found one that looked good. It had an extra plate that secured to the frame behind the rear plastic (area of the license plate) as well as the standard connections. Appeared to be just what I need. Now I cannot find that receiver/web address again. Anyone see the one/ones I'm talking about?

Never gave much thought carrying bike on the bike, but since I use quick detach spindles it could be done. Took front tire of my bike and placed in vertical position behind the wing, raised to receiver height and noticed forks were right at trunk rack height. Should be easy enough to make a receiver mount to accept both tires and spindle mount for the trunk rack. About 90 percent of the bike is canceled behind the motorcycle without adding extra drag. Weight of bike is probably no more than carrying a cooler off hitch.
