Adding LED's to my 2008
Was looking to add some additional LED's to the Wing and I had seen the site for "Winglites" and liked what I saw...however..the price was out of my current range. So I decided to try and do similar myself. Purchase a bunch of 3mm RED LEDs, some 3mm mounting bezels and some pre-printed circuit boards. I have never enjoyed drilling holes in my Wing...so I was able to buy some spare trunk and saddlebag molding to use for this. With careful measurement and a drill press..I have a good start on adding the lights.
I was able to use a different pattern because of the printed ckt boards..each holds 9 LED. On the back molding of the trunk..I have 36 LEDs and on each trunk side molding will be 18 LEDs. With proper wiring, they will be both running light and brake lights!
Next will be the saddlebag molding....

Make sure to post pictures of the finished product. What boards did you use? I have been doing lots with led's and messing around with Arduino's to control lighting. Always curious as to what electronics items people are using in their customizing projects. That ought to look really good at night.

The ckt boards are from http://www.superbrightleds.com in their component LED section. Each board has 9 LEDs with each 3 LEDs using a resistor. Once I have it all together, more pictures will be posted.waituntilthebeep wrote: What boards did you use? I have been doing lots with led's and messing around with Arduino's to control lighting. I had made a set of lights using an Adafruit Trinket and some RGB NeoPixil rings, but the final device caused too much radio interference, so until I can correct that they are removed. What are you doing with the Arduino?

Here is a (blurry) picture of the LEDs lit up. Will be adding a resistor/diode combination to all the lights to be both running and brake lights...also thinking about adding amber LEDs to the corners for turn signals....

I have been playing around with programming for a commercial trailer lighting tester that can be plugged into a semi-trailer to test and do some lighting diag. Also working on a rear helmet lighting setup but have not found the right tech products for mounting and such. I have a project in the planning stage to do exactly what you are doing but was toying with using RGB led's and the Arduino to do color change and pulse width modulation for brightness (running and brakes) as well as chasing lights for turn, etc. Problem is, I have way more projects than I have time so I have not gotten past programming and collecting materials. Also want to backlight my mirror pockets with amber, my speaker grills with green and install green underside lighting all controlled with the Arduino. Got lots of the stuff but no time to install itwingpilot96 wrote:waituntilthebeep wrote: What are you doing with the Arduino?

The lighting looks great so far. I would be curious to see it all in action with the existing lights.

Re: Adding LED's to my 2008
I did a PWM circuit when I replaced all my rear-facing lights with LEDs, to handle brake/running lights. I did a discrete (555 driving a MOSFET) circuit rather than an Arduino or PIC - mainly because I didn't want a random power glitch (and bike power is noisy) locking up a processor and randomly disabling my brake lights.waituntilthebeep wrote:I have been playing around with programming for a commercial trailer lighting tester that can be plugged into a semi-trailer to test and do some lighting diag. Right on. That looks nice! Definitely grabs the attention of someone behind you. I had not thought of the voltage being dirty and crashing the Duino. I know there are guys running them... WingAdmin has a "bike computer" that is Arduino based I think. a 555 makes sense for PWM only circuits. Got a box of them that I have yet to play around with. All in time I guess. I want to light my bike up like a Christmas tree but don't want to pay the thousands of dollars that Kuryakin a others want for bolt on bling. I know I can do it myself for far less. Just got another box of blue and green LED's today for that. Bummer that ya can't run blues while on the road.

Yes, the "Bike PC" I built is Arduino-based, and it has a huge filtering power supply section on it...but I still have problems with the LCD locking up from a huge EM pulse emitted by the HID lights when they start up. I've done every bit of filtering I can think of, and it still happens, so I am thinking perhaps it is actually RF, not a voltage spike.waituntilthebeep wrote:Right on. That looks nice! So is the power on our rides actually that dirty? I have not added any lighting or what not yet to my Wing so have not met any radio interference issues that some talk about. Now it has me concerned that I won't be able to get clean enough power to do the Duino lighting project.WingAdmin wrote:waituntilthebeep wrote: I've done every bit of filtering I can think of, and it still happens, so I am thinking perhaps it is actually RF, not a voltage spike.

Where did you get the extra trunk and saddlebag molding? Was looking online and the chrome stuff was cheaper. I like the stock look with the light a lot better.

Re: Adding LED's to my 2008
I had looked on EBay to see if any one was selling.. I was able to buy a complete set of Titanium (7 pieces) for $10.00 + shipping. There was another one I was looking at that had just the saddlebag molding (4 pieces) for $10..just need to look around and find what is available. I had also looked on the "item wanted or for sale" on multiple Goldwing site. Sometimes people add the Kurykan kits and just want to get back a little cash for their purchase. I was able to get color matched trunk molding and rear center (license plate area) trim for $15.00. I found the Titanium presented a nice contrast to my entire red bike...so I may be wiring them up shortly and be able to switch up between colors! Below are a couple examples...go to the various GW sites and just ask if anyone has some to sell.....Just provide your color code (found under the gas cap door) to get color matched!Timberwerkz wrote:Where did you get the extra trunk and saddlebag molding? If you notice..I currently don't have LEDs on the rear saddlebag moldings. The circuit boards I had used are just a bit too long to be install there. I will be adding LEDs there shortly using a wirewrap tool to connect the LEDs to resistors and power. If you are not familiar with wire-wrapping..I will post additional pictures later. Just another way to make good solid connections and not have to use a soldering iron!

Re: Adding LED's to my 2008
So this weekend (prior to the SuperBowl) I decided to finish up my LED lighting project. The last part to be completed were the wrap around molding the match up with the saddlebag molding. I used a bit different method to hook things together. Previously I had used circuit boards I purchased from superbrightleds.com , but on this lower molding the circuit boards were too big..so I decided to do wire wrapping. For those not familiar, this is using a specific wire wrap tool and a small gauge wire..the connection is made by wrapping the wire around the component.
This makes a solid solder-less connection. By wire wrapping the LEDs in series and adding a resistor, I was doing the same type of connection as the circuit board. There are 3 LEDs in series with a resistor and there are a total of 6 circuits. The small circuit board just has the resistors for connectivity.. Now I just need to attach to the bike and add power & ground.

Wow, wire wrapping...I still have one of those tools, although I don't know that I have any wire still for it.
I would be a bit worried about vibration breaking that very thin, solid-core wire. I'd probably encapsulate the wiring in hot glue or something to strengthen it once the wires were in place.

Re: Adding LED's to my 2008
We have a 2008 GL1800 and the rear turn signal were not thought out very correctly. Since being mounted so low and in the Florida sunlight many people cannot see from the rear too well. Also when towing a trailer they are hard to see. So I installed a set of small three element LED’s to my rear view mirrors in order for other drivers to see my turn signals. I have since changed the position to the top of the mirror for better visibility. I wired them with wire taps between the run and turn signal wires. They are attached with double sided sticky tape. Has now worked for several years in that position.

Hey Wingpilot... In the second video you posted - a head on shot of the bike, you have clear led eyebrows around your headlamp assy"s. Was that a kit or did you drill in LED"s? I am looking at doing the exact same thing to my wing. I assume you wired them into the running light circuit for each side mirror so they shut off when the turn indicators are active?
