new to me and running very rough 1990
just got this and it runs rough, coughs and splutters on take off and when trying to excellerate . it does have a "sweet spot" once moving between 2500 and 4000 rpms. it idles rough until it really warms up, it idles almost 1500 rpms. while at idle pull in the clutch put into first and without releasing clutch it starts running rough and rpms drops and tries to die. any ideals ?

Rough idle until hot, idles high... that sounds like symptoms of a vacuum leak to me. There are a lot of vacuum lines to check, that would be a great starting point.
Winging it every chance I get

The "new-to-me" part makes me wonder how much solid "background" you have on that new ride. Since that beast is 27-28 yrs old (like mine), get every ounce of background on it that you can, it'll help us troubleshoot your problem.
As stated previously, checking the vacuum lines sounds like a solid place to start. Could possibly be the spark plugs too tho, , , or a clogged/dirty Air filter, , , or bad fuel/carbs. , , , Let us know if the vacuum lines are OK after you check em. We'll go from there
