Valve clearance 2006 gl1800

Post by Alias69 » Sun Apr 15, 2018 10:40 am

Decided to check my valve clearance for the first time on my 2006 gl1800. Got 36k miles so figured I was due a bit ago. I’m checking them right now without loosening the tensioner since I don’t have the tool and they are in a horrible place to begin with.

Question is when I’m checking these , are you forcing the feelers in between or just whatever slide in between with ease? not sure when to call it quits in measuring if it’s too tight or too loose. Because on my exhaust side I can def fit a thicker gauge in all of them with a little finger force. Intakes all seems to be measuring alittle tight at 0.005 and exhaust all seems to be measuring loose to where adjustment is needed

The feeler gauge should slid through with just a little friction. .005" on the intake is still within tolerance of .006 +- .001" exhaust is fine at .008 to .010". So if .005 goes in the intake but .007 won't you're good and the same if .008 goes in the exhaust and .010 doesn't.

When I was measuring the exhaust side , with some finger force I can slide a much thicker gauge like .015, and that goes for all of them ... now I know the chances that they are that loose is not likely , just wondering if maybe I’m forcing them too much

Well I measured them a couple more times just to be sure , all the intakes were a tight 0.006 and loose 0.005 and exhausts were a tight 0.009 and loose 0.008. The only one that seemed off was cylinder 6 that was a tight 0.005. I don’t have a 0.004 feeler gauge but I’d imagine that one should be loosened up alittle

Was that tight one an intake or exhaust?

That was the intake on cylinder 6, not sure if releasing the tensioners wil make that much of a difference, I heard it doesn’t and from what I read better to be alittle loose then tight

It matters less on the intake than on the exhaust, as long as there is some clearance it won't cause any damage. A lot to go through for just 1 shim. Personally I would leave it alone and check it again in 15 or 20,000 miles.

Finally got around to finishing it all up , I agree , def doesn’t seem worth the hassle to take it all apart. I will check up on it down the road and see if that one tightens up anymore, thanks for the help

Valve clearance is checked when the engine is cold (under 95 deg), and with the cam chain de-tensioned. Doing it when the chain has tension is an invalid check.
