Sounds like you need to replace the speedo cable. You can pull it and lube but the teflon coating inside the tube wears out. They are not very expensive so I would just replace.

4 parts may cause that kind of noise,
1. Speedo gear (plastic gear in the front wheel gear box is bad or not lubricated enough)
2. Speedo cable is bad or not lubricated enough (graphite is good as lubricant)
3. Speedometer input (brass piece where the speedometer cable is attached should be cleaned and lubricated; if it is stuck the cable can't rotate freely and twists inside making noise; it can damage the cable or plastic gear in the front wheel; I had used wd40 to clean and lubricate there, a lot of brass pieces came out while spraying wd40 into the housing)
4. Speedometer gears inside (the grease inside gets hardened after so many years and plastic gears inside may be damaged if not cleaned and lubricated)

Will give a new speedometer cable a try first. Thanks for your insight.
