Easy way to open side marker light?

Post by Stew » Wed May 16, 2018 9:58 pm

Separating the saddlebag lights has been discussed, but is there a non-destructive way to separate the amber side marker lens from it's base? Looking at it, it looks melted together, thermowelded or whatever you call it.

Hey Stew. If you don't mind my asking, why do you need to get it apart?

I was gonna wait until it was all done to show it, but I'm wanting to do strip LEDs like people have done with the saddlebag lights. I just got a small order in from SuperBrightLEDs. I do have an ultra-fine saw from working on models but I'd rather not saw it open.

Man that would look awesome. But I think they are thermowelded. Do you have a scroll saw? If you want to experiment, I have a set that you can have.

Yeah that's what it looks like. Yep I think those lights would really benefit from those type of LEDs, and thank you for the offer... PM sent! :D

just my idea, that looks like alot of lights but couldent you simply drill a hole in the back large enough to allow the strip to be pulled through and additional holes on the fwd/aft ends and simply fish the strip in and around using .032 safety wire or any suitable pull device. when finished use black RTV to seal the install holes.

I'll definitely have to shorten the strand, which you can do by cutting at designated points. Good thought but with having to solder jumper wires to make two rows and the black plastic base where you need to stick them to not being flat, it looks like they need to come apart to be able to fit the lights, a flat base and the jumper wires all in there. I'll stare at it longer and give that some thought though. I remember when these kind of things used to just screw together :(

I have placed only 3 led segment through the bulb housing and hot glued there. If you want to do what I have done, you don't need to remove the lens.

If they are the same as the rear lenses, then the (somewhat fragile and brittle) lens part is glued to the (softer, ABS) back piece with a thermoplastic glue. Heating it up (gently) with a heat gun or strong hairdryer turns the glue to mush, and the lens can be pulled apart from the base. It's a long and tedious process - each of the rear lenses from my bike took me over an hour to get apart.

I just did my marker lights recently.
Those lights are made of a different type of plastic than the rear lights.
I used a Dremel tool with a fine tooth circular saw blade to cut them
open. After installing the LEDs, I epoxied them back together.
Looks great.

Stew, I'm having problems with my email so I'll post it here. No I don't have paypal so don't worry about it. I'll get the marker lights out to you tomorrow or Saturday. If you like you can just pay it forward. Be sure to post pictures when you get them done. Oh by the way the guy who suggested the Dremel tool has the best idea. You can get cut off wheels for them that are designed for cutting plastic and are a real thin cut. If you don't mind let me know when you get the marker lights. Thanks, Tony.

Wow, right on! I've been thinking more about the ideas mentioned here and think I know how I'm going to do it. It's not exactly complicated but I'll definitely take pics and do up a DIY with part numbers and such, in case someone's curious. I'm hoping it turns out as good as it looks in my mind :P

Hey TwoTone Trike, I went ahead and started on this earlier today and all went well, if you haven't already sent those out you can hang on to them. I'm happy with the result, the epoxy is curing on the housing, once that's done and I put them back in the bike I'll get one or two more pics and write the DIY. Thanks again, I appreciate it!

Hey Stew, To late they're on their way. That's o.k. though. If you know someone that can use them let them have them. I'm glad that you've got it all lined out. Keep us posted. Have a good one. Later, Tony.

Yup. They do look awesome with LEDs in them.

First photo is with the flash, the second is without. The flash shows up the reflective pin-striping. Its black pin-stripe on a black bike.
As for the LEDs in the marker... my lens fell off and I took the opportunity to change the lighting before glueing it back together. The right side still has the standard bulb in it. And I'm still waiting for the right side to fall off.
