How to remove Kurykyn iso grips!

Post by NOVAwing » Tue Jun 12, 2018 7:48 pm

Im SO PISSED!

I decided to throw the new grips on tonight.

Left side went fine.

Slid the throttle side on and it froze almost instantly at 3/4 on!

Used the supplied glue like a dumbass instead of hairspray.

Yes I sanded, cleaned, and test fit first....

This throttle side will probably never come off.
Im probably gonna need a new throttle sleeve and grip.

 :x

yup had a pair of them , look pretty but hurt my hand, thru them in the dumpster, anyways, use a soft rubber mallet and tap on the end to push on, might break the glue loose, or try getting an air hose with a blow gun end and get air under and try to get air under it

I recently installed a set on my son's Yamaha and if I remember they use super glue. You might try fingernail polish remover or acetone if it will not damage the plastic a small amount you can get to go between the grip and sleeve might break it loose without beating on it and maybe breaking something.

Heat will help, use a hair dryer to heat up the grip and as other said, a soft mallet to hammer it on. If push comes to shove use a cutting tool to cut thru it and you can save the throttle sleeve.

I just replaced my throttle tube/grip because I was being a dummy and broke it when fitting the throttle cables on. The good news is it's cheap, about $10 and it comes with the new grip already on it. In fact if you want my old one let me know and I'll drop it in the mail, it still worked fine just part of the plastic where you slide the cable in broke away. In reality it would probably never be a problem but I replaced it anyway.
Winging it every chance I get 8-)

Thanks for all the advice everyone!
This forum is the BEST!

You all are awesome.

I guess I am in for some wd40 and my small flat head screw driver action. We will see how it goes.....

Stew, thanks for the offer. I will most likely order a new throttle sleeve and single throttle grip from Kuryakyn if I can't get the old one off without destroying the sleeve.

I heard they used to sell single grips for this situation, but not just replacement rubber inserts :x

Where did you get your throttle sleeve from?

Thanks,
NOVAwing

WD-40 will not work to release the grip glue. Super Glue (Cyanoacrylate) is what is provided to glue the grip in place. You will need Cyanoacrylate Debonder or Acetone to release the grip. Just be aware that the debonder or acetone will attack just about any plastic except for nylon. The throttle sleeve is made of nylon and should not be in jeopardy.

Ah lucky you!

I will have to call and find out if my local dealer has one. Highly doubt it, they didn't even stock tires for my bike anymore.

Maybe partzilla has this?

Thanks for the information.

I had a feeling something was weird with everyone using wd40..... I use this same glue on my RC model airplanes, I know what a pita it is to remove.

I will get some fingernail polish remover, acetone type of course.

The throttle sleeve is nylon you say? That would be great news as nylon is resistant to acetone, very good to know, thanks!

I wonder why everyone says use wd40, and why it works for them?

Thanks,

You could remove the four screws at the end of the grip, and reach the glued parts there, then try to separate the parts from each other by using a flat tool.
